About Brookline, MA

One of the towns right next to Boston is Brookline. The town calls itself a “primarily residential place with urban characteristics.” That mix is important for a move. On one end of the street, there may be a quieter residential area, and on the other, there may be a busy business area or an older multi-family building. This page gives you more information about the town of Brookline on the official Brookline overview.

The part of town often determines how moves go in real life. People tend to be more aware of their meters and use the street space more at Coolidge Corner and JFK Crossing. People who live in Brookline Village and Washington Square often need to pay more attention to timing, where they load, and how far they have to carry things from the truck to the doorway. Even though Chestnut Hill may be more spread out, that doesn’t mean it’s easier to get to if the road, grade, or house layout is tricky.

Road connection is also important. One of Brookline’s main streets is Beacon Street. Harvard Street connects some of the town’s busy spots. Washington Street connects Washington Square to Brookline Village. And Boylston Street / Route 9 makes it harder to get to some parts of Brookline, like the Chestnut Hill side. You can tell how important that part of town is on a local level by the fact that the town is redoing Washington Street between Washington Square and Brookline Village. On the official Brookline design projects page, you can see what’s being done to improve traffic in the town right now.

🏙️ Please look at Brookline’s parking page, moving permit page, and parking meter information page for official local information that will really help you before you move.

Moving Process in Brookline, MA

Moving with Move & Care consists of three phases: planning, the actual move, and after the move.

Even though everything is simple, Brookline has enough local details that making plans ahead of time is very helpful.

1. Preparation

Let’s say you get an estimate and pick a date. What you do next will depend on which service you choose, but packing is still the most important thing.

If you use our packing service, we can do the packing for you, either before the move or during the move, based on how much you need. We can also pack just fragile items, one room, or the parts of the move that you think will be hardest to do on your own if you’d rather only get some help. If you are packing by yourself, you should start early and use a clear plan instead of putting everything off until the last few days.

Before the move, you should also think about a few questions that are special to Brookline:

  1. What kind of building are you leaving or entering? Brookline has a lot of different kinds of homes. According to town documents, there are more multifamily homes in North Brookline and more single-family homes in South Brookline. The homes range in size from three-story flats to much bigger homes. Based on the address, a move in Brookline might involve stairs, narrower entrances, shared exterior access, storage in the basement, or requirements for a managed building. We can work around the fact that your building needs a COI or an elevator reservation.
  2. Need no-parking signs or plans for people to use the street? Brookline has a set way of dealing with moving signs. According to the town, moving no-parking signs can be bought at Town Hall. Metered spots need one sign per meter head, meter rentals cost one meter per day, and DPW Occupancy Permits are needed for moving boxes or PODs that are put on the street. It says on the same official page that the police will not respect the signs if the rules are not followed. See the official Brookline moving permit instructions.
  3. What are the parking rules and meters close to your address? In Brookline’s business districts, curb entry may not be as easy as customers think it will be. On the town’s parking meter page, it says that Brookline’s meters are usually in place until 8 PM. This means that meter rules can still affect moves in the late afternoon. Read the official parking meter information and make sure you know what the rules are on your block.
  4. Do you have a clear plan for moving? It’s easier to move when you plan ahead for things like when to turn off utilities, forward mail, hand over keys, and the final packing order. Write down everything you need to do and let your moving manager know if anything changes.

We do not just send movers to your address. We also help customers plan for things like entry, timing, the amount of packing, and other things that can slow down a Brookline move if they aren’t thought out ahead of time.

2. The Move

Our crew will arrive at your location on move day at the time we agreed upon. In front of you, they carefully and quickly load the truck, disassemble furniture as needed, pack things if that service is included, and make sure everything is safe with the right materials.

A lot of the time, Brookline moves depend on good sequencing. It is actually not the same job to move a single-family home in Chestnut Hill, a condo near Coolidge Corner, or a multi-family move near Brookline Village. It’s possible that the crew will have to work around curbs, meter locations, stair carries, shared halls, or tighter loading conditions. We can also plan a stop at storage along the way if that’s what the plan is.

3. After the Move

When they arrive, the crew unloads your things into the rooms you choose, reassembles furniture as needed, and puts things back where they belong so you don’t have to move heavy things around by yourself after the truck leaves.

If help with unpacking is part of the package, we can do that too. After everything is unloaded, you can check the delivery to make sure it’s complete and in good shape before we leave.

About Pricing

Move & Care usually charges two types of prices: hourly rates for local moves and flat rates for long-distance moves. Customers who are moving within Brookline, into Boston, to nearby suburbs, or anywhere else within 150 miles of Boston should generally pay by the hour. We usually prepare a flat-rate estimate for long-distance moves and interstate relocations.

What changes the total price in Brookline? The exact addresses, how easy it is to park the truck, whether no-parking signs or meter rentals are needed, the distance from the curb to the doorway, the number of stairs or elevator steps, and whether you add packing or unpacking services are usually the most important things. Access conditions can have a bigger effect in Brookline than just mileage. This is especially true in places with higher curb demand, like Coolidge Corner, Washington Square, Brookline Village, and other more crowded parts of town.

F.A.Q. about moving in Brookline, MA

Yes, our moving company is fully licensed for local moves within the state. While interstate movers are regulated by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), local moving companies are regulated by the state. We also have individual state licenses wherever our offices are located: Massachusetts (MC Number: 1018431), North Carolina (NCUC Number: C-3067) and Texas (TXDMV: 009636518C).

Local moves with Move and Care are generated at an hourly rate. When we determine your moving plan, we also determine the approximate labor time and the number of movers needed. The number of movers determines the hourly rate. If your move is large, more movers means faster work and lower cost.

Your quota will give you an approximate cost of the job, the actual cost will be determined by the actual time spent, which may take a little less or a little more time (we take into account 15 minute increments).

Find out more on our pricing page.

Move and Care provides two types of insurance. Basic insurance (Released Value Protection) - this is free and is included by default in any of our services. Move and Care guarantees liability for no more than 60 cents per pound per item. And Full Value Protection - this insurance means that any damage is fully covered, but there is an additional charge.

The movers will not transport perishable products, nor will they transport any hazardous objects. We also do not transport plants or weapons, and our services do not include animal transportation.
