Move & Care

Movers in Woburn, MA

A Woburn moving company with its office on New Boston Street, not a crew dispatched in from another town. Residential and commercial, local and long distance.

We Move with Care | Woburn, MA Movers

Most of the moving companies in Woburn, MA that you will find online are not actually in Woburn. We are: this is where the company started, the office is still on New Boston Street, and our Google listing sits in the city itself rather than in a dispatch office somewhere else. Where that shows up is in the small questions. Ask whether a truck can get down your street and where it can legally stand once it is there, and the answer comes from a crew that works these streets every week rather than from a map.

Woburn is also not the triple-decker city people picture when they think about moving near Boston, and that changes how a day here is planned. Census figures for 2020 to 2024 put 46.5% of the housing in detached single-family homes and only 6.3% in three- and four-unit buildings, while 11.1% now sits in buildings of fifty units or more. Those two ends of the market need almost opposite preparation. On a 1930s single-family off Salem Street the questions are where the truck sits in the driveway and whether the tall dresser makes the turn at the top of the stairs. In one of the newer buildings on Commerce Way none of that matters much, and the day instead turns on a certificate of insurance being on file and a service elevator being free when the crew arrives. We quote and staff the two differently.

Move and Care is licensed and insured for both local moves inside Massachusetts and long distance moves out of Woburn. Moves within the state run under our Massachusetts household goods carrier license, MA DPU #31854. Interstate work runs under USDOT #3212621 and MC #1018431. Our other offices hold NCUC #C-3067 and TXDMV #009636518C.

Around 35% of Woburn's housing stock went up before 1950, and roughly 17.6% of it before 1900, so original door casings, straight-run staircases and plaster that scuffs if you look at it wrong are the normal case here rather than the exception. Crews pad the banister and the casings before anything moves, take bed frames and sectionals apart where there is room to work, and bag hardware to the piece it came off.

First consultation costs nothing, and our reviews and testimonials are a better guide than anything we could write about ourselves.

About Woburn, MA

Image of Woburn's central square during the festival

Woburn is a city of about 40,900 people roughly 10 miles north of Boston, sitting where I-93 meets I-95 and Route 128. The parts of it we work most are North Woburn, Central Square and the downtown around Woburn Common, Montvale, Mishawum, Walnut Hill, Woburn Highlands, Cummingsville west of downtown, and the streets around Horn Pond and Whispering Hill. Residential addresses here are almost always 01801, the city's only residential ZIP code.

Most trips in and out run on a short list of roads: Main Street and Pleasant Street, which both carry Route 38, Cambridge Road as US Route 3 down to Four Corners at Lexington and Russell Streets, Montvale Avenue across to I-93, and Washington Street heading north. Rail service is the Lowell Line out of Anderson Regional Transportation Center at 100 Atlantic Avenue, which also carries the Amtrak Downeaster. The nearer Mishawum station has been closed since December 2020 and has not reopened, which is worth knowing if a listing sold you on walking to a train.

The city has been building. Woburn's own Housing Production Plan counts roughly 1,632 residential units built or started since 2020, including 350 at Woburn Village on the old Woburn Mall site off Mishawum Road, 425 at 316 New Boston Street, 292 at Emblem 120 on Commerce Way, 200 at Emery Flats and 168 at J Woburn Heights on Main Street. Alongside the older single-family streets, in other words, Woburn now has a substantial stock of managed elevator buildings, and a fair number of local moves run between the two.

Demand shows up in the prices. Zillow Research put the median sale price in Woburn at $745,900 as of May 2026, with typical asking rent around $2,780 a month as of June 2026, against a rental vacancy rate of just 3.4% in the city's own 2023 figures. What that means on the ground is that people here rarely get much slack between a closing and a lease, which is why so many Woburn jobs need storage somewhere in the middle.

🏙️ For anything official, the City of Woburn website is the source. The city's subreddit is a decent read on individual streets and buildings.

Parking a moving truck in Woburn

This is the question we get asked most, and most answers online get it wrong. Woburn does not issue a moving permit. There is no reserved-curb-space permit, no street occupancy permit and no moving-truck permit anywhere in the city's Traffic Code, its permits portal or its Public Works pages. The Traffic Commission can change a street's parking regulations, but it meets once a month on the third Thursday and petitions have to be filed with the City Clerk by 1:00 p.m. on the Monday before. That is a regulatory process, not something you can arrange for a Saturday move.

So a Woburn move is planned around the standing rules instead. The ones that actually decide where a truck can sit:

  • The ten-foot rule. Parking is prohibited anywhere it fails to leave a clear lane at least ten feet wide for passing traffic. On the narrower residential streets, that measurement is what decides whether a truck can stop outside your door.

  • Driveways. Parking in front of any private road or driveway is prohibited, including your own, and so is parking directly across from a driveway on a street too narrow for a car to back out of safely.

  • Sundays and overnight. A commercial vehicle of one ton or over may not stand on a city street for more than an hour between 12:01 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., or at any time on a Sunday. There is an exception that saves the day here: the rule does not apply while the vehicle is actually loading or unloading. So a Sunday move is fine. Leaving a loaded truck parked on the street waiting for you is not.

  • Meters and service zones. Commercial vehicles get up to 30 minutes in a metered space without paying while loading or unloading, and service zones cap out at the same half hour. Downtown, that tends to shape the order things leave the house in.

  • Heavy vehicle exclusions. Schedule 4 of the Traffic Code bars vehicles over 2.5 tons capacity from a list of streets that includes Alfred, Bow, Eaton, Green, Pine, Wade and Warren, parts of Mishawum Road, School Street and Washington Street, plus overnight limits on Holton, Nashua, Merrimac and Wood. Section 7-20 then exempts trucks going to or from an address on those streets to make a delivery or a collection. A move to a home on one of them is therefore allowed, while a truck taking the same street as a shortcut is not.

❄️ Winter changes the side of the street. Woburn's overnight winter ban runs from midnight on November 15 to midnight on March 31 and closes the even-numbered side of every city street between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., with towing as the penalty, which leaves the odd-numbered side as the legal one overnight. If a snow emergency is declared there is no on-street parking on either side, and interfering with snow removal carries a $50 fine. The 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. window does not touch a normal working day, but it does rule out staging a truck outside your house the night before.

If you are moving between Woburn and the city proper, our guide to Boston moving permits and parking reservations covers the other end, where the rules are stricter and a permit genuinely is required.

Send us the address when you book and we will check it against the parking restrictions, the heavy-vehicle schedule and the winter rules before the date rather than on the morning. Where a street will not take the 26-foot truck, the usual answer is simply to bring a smaller one, since our fleet runs 16, 20 and 26 foot box trucks. Only when nothing fits does the job become a shuttle from a legal spot, and that is far better priced in advance than discovered on the morning.

Moving Process in Woburn MA

Now we'll look at how your move with Move and Care Woburn will go. It's a simple and transparent process. It can be divided into three stages: preparation for the move, the move itself, and post-move.

1. Preparation

Assume you get an offer and schedule a move with us. What's the next step? Your next steps depend on your situation.

The first priority is packing. If you utilize our packing service to the fullest, we'll do everything for you and you don't have to worry. Most likely, depending on the amount of stuff, we will organize the packing of your belongings on the day of the move or a day/ couple of days before the move. If, however, you don't use our service or have opted for a hybrid approach (we pack some of your belongings, you pack some of your belongings yourself or, for example, we will only provide the packing materials), then we recommend studying our packing guide. It will help you to overcome the difficulties.

💡 Most importantly: if your move is long distance, careful packing is essential! Things will be in the truck for a long time, encountering bad roads and changing weather conditions.

The second thing to settle is access. There is no permit to apply for in Woburn, as covered above, so what matters is your own building's rules rather than the city's paperwork. In a single-family that means clearing the driveway and telling us which way the truck should face. In one of the managed buildings it means asking two questions early: how long the service elevator can be held, and exactly which companies the certificate of insurance has to name. Both answers take longer to get out of a property manager than people expect, and we can have the COI issued once we know. If you are not sure what your building wants, send it to us and we will ask them.

⚠️ Where the truck cannot legally stand outside the door, the crew works from the nearest legal spot instead. Nothing stops the move, but a longer carry means more time on the clock, so it is worth flagging a tight street when you book rather than on the day.

Explore our moving checklist to organize your move and make sure you don't forget all the things you need.

2. The Move

What happens next? We arrive at your location at the appointed time. We find a parking space. Then, with you (or a trusted person) present, we begin loading all of your belongings and transferring them to the truck. We wrap all the furniture will assemble and disassemble it if necessary for the move.

❗ We do not transport people, animals or plants. Also hazardous and perishable items.

Next, we drive the truck to your next location (new home or office). If necessary, we have no problem making a few stops. This could be a storage facility or, for example, the home of your relatives or friends.

🚚 We have the GPS tracking sensors installed on our trucks. So you won't lose sight of your belongings!

3. After the Move

When we arrive at your location, we start unloading your belongings in your presence. We will place all the boxes in the right rooms, assemble the furniture and arrange it the way you want it. If your plan includes unpacking, we will do that as well.

Next, the movers will wait for you to inspect whether things are in order. After that, the move is complete!

💥 Damage or loss If you find items damaged or missing, capture it on camera and contact your moving manager as soon as possible!

How much movers cost in Woburn, MA

Distance decides the pricing model. Moves under 150 miles are local and billed by the hour. Moves over 150 miles are long distance and quoted as a flat rate on weight and mileage.

For a local Woburn move the hourly rate is set by how many movers the job needs, and the total is that rate against the hours actually worked. There is a three-hour minimum, and time past it is billed in 15-minute increments. The figures below are the Greater Boston ranges from our own cost of movers in Boston guide, which is the market Woburn is priced in. Treat them as estimates for planning, not a quote.

Typical local moving costs in Woburn, MA (estimates, Greater Boston rates)
Home size Crew Typical hours Estimated total
Studio 2 movers 3 hours $300 to $500
1-bedroom apartment 2 to 3 movers 4 to 5 hours $500 to $1,000
2-bedroom home 3 movers 5 to 7 hours $900 to $1,500
3-bedroom home 3 to 4 movers 6 to 9 hours $1,500 to $2,500
4-bedroom home 4 movers 8 to 10 hours $2,200 to $3,500+

The hourly rate covers the movers, the truck, gas, tolls, basic coverage, blankets and dollies, and furniture taken apart and put back together. Billed separately: packing materials, a $50 equipment charge for blankets, dollies and tools, and hoisting at $40 per item per flight where a piece will not make the stairs. Heavy and specialty items are priced on top, and the published figures are $160 for an upright piano, $240 for a baby grand, and from $60 for anything over 200 pounds.

What moves the number in Woburn is usually access rather than the size of the house. A 2-bedroom with a driveway and a straight path to the door finishes near the bottom of its range. The same inventory on a street where the truck has to stop half a block away, or in a building where the service elevator is only free for a set window, finishes near the top. That is why we ask about the street and the building before quoting.

Storage for Woburn moves

With ownership vacancy at 0.5% and rental vacancy at 3.4%, Woburn dates rarely line up cleanly, and a gap between a closing and a lease is the normal case rather than bad luck. Moving and storage handles that as one job instead of two: the crew loads, the goods go into secure climate-controlled storage, and the same company brings them out again when your date arrives.

Storage is billed monthly, and the price includes the loading, the unloading and the transport to and from the facility, so there is no separate delivery charge appearing later. If you do not yet know how long you need, book the move and give us an approximate window. Extending is straightforward; unpicking two separate contracts from two companies is not.

Long distance and interstate moves from Woburn

A good share of what leaves Woburn is not going to the next town. Moves over 150 miles are quoted as a flat rate built on the weight of the shipment and the mileage, so the price is fixed before the truck is loaded and the clock stops mattering. Interstate work runs under USDOT #3212621 and MC #1018431, and the trucks carry GPS tracking so you can see where your shipment is.

Common runs out of Woburn head down the coast to New York and Washington, or further south to Charlotte, where we have our own office, and Atlanta. For what those routes cost, the Boston cost guide lists current ranges by home size and distance, and long distance movers in Boston covers how the process works end to end.

Move-out cleaning in Woburn

If you need the place empty and clean for a landlord's inspection or a buyer's walkthrough, move-in and move-out cleaning can be booked onto the same job. It is easiest to schedule the clean once the truck is loaded and the rooms are empty, which for a Woburn apartment usually means the same afternoon. Booking it alongside the move keeps it on one schedule with one company, so nobody is standing around waiting on a key.

F.A.Q. about moving in Woburn, MA

Local moves in Woburn are billed hourly, and the rate depends on how many movers the job needs, with a three-hour minimum and 15-minute increments after that. As a planning guide from our Greater Boston rates, a studio with two movers runs about $300 to $500, a one-bedroom $500 to $1,000, a two-bedroom $900 to $1,500 and a three-bedroom $1,500 to $2,500. The rate covers the crew, the truck, gas, tolls, blankets, dollies, basic coverage and furniture taken apart and put back together. Materials, a $50 equipment charge and hoisting at $40 per item per flight are separate. What usually decides where a Woburn job lands inside its range is access: whether the truck can stand near the door, and whether a service elevator has to be booked. See pricing for the full detail.

No. Woburn does not issue a moving permit or a reserved curb space permit, and there is no provision for one in the city Traffic Code, the permits portal or the Public Works pages. The Traffic Commission can change a street's parking regulations, but it meets on the third Thursday of the month and petitions are due to the City Clerk by 1:00 p.m. the Monday before, so it is not a way to hold space for a move. What governs the day instead: parking has to leave a clear lane at least ten feet wide for passing traffic, driveways cannot be blocked, and commercial vehicles get 30 minutes in a metered space or a service zone while loading or unloading. Send us the address when you book and we will check it against the restrictions before the date.

Midweek and mid-month. Tuesday through Thursday, away from the first and last days of the month, buys better crew availability and a wider arrival window than a Saturday. Season counts for as much as the day: October through April is quieter and cheaper than summer, and the stretch around September 1, when leases across Greater Boston turn over, is both the priciest and the hardest to book. Sunday looks like the quiet option and needs more thought than people expect, because the city restricts commercial vehicles from standing on a street on Sundays except while actively loading or unloading.

Nothing should be hidden, but the line items people forget are consistent. Packing materials are billed separately from the packers' hours, and a full apartment of cartons adds up faster than most people budget for. There is a $50 equipment charge covering blankets, dollies and tools. Heavy and specialty pieces are priced separately: $160 for an upright piano, $240 for a baby grand, from $60 for anything over 200 pounds, and $40 per item per flight where something has to be hoisted rather than carried. The Woburn-specific one is carry distance: if the ten-foot clear lane rule puts the truck half a block from your door, every trip gets longer, and on an hourly bill that shows up in the total.

Yes. Woburn's Traffic Code says a commercial vehicle of one ton or over may not stand on a city street at any time on a Sunday, but it exempts the vehicle while it is actually loading or unloading, so a Sunday move goes ahead normally. The real constraint is that the truck cannot sit parked and waiting between stages, so the day has to run without long gaps in it. Mention that it is a Sunday when you book and we will size the crew to keep things moving.

The city's overnight winter parking ban runs from midnight on November 15 to midnight on March 31 and closes the even-numbered side of every city street between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., with towing as the penalty, which leaves the odd-numbered side as the legal one overnight. That window does not touch a normal working day, but it does rule out staging a truck outside the house the night before. If a snow emergency is declared there is no on-street parking on either side, and interfering with snow removal carries a $50 fine. When a ban falls on your date we call and move you to the first workable window after it lifts.

Licensing first. A company moving households inside Massachusetts needs a Department of Public Utilities license, and a company crossing state lines needs federal registration. Ask for both numbers and check them. Ours are MA DPU #31854, USDOT #3212621 and MC #1018431. After that, treat these as warnings: a quote given without anyone asking about stairs, access or what is actually in the house; a large deposit demanded up front; a refusal to put crew size, hourly rate and coverage in writing before the date. A mover who cannot produce a certificate of insurance when a building asks for one is telling you something useful.

Yes, and it comes up constantly here, because ownership vacancy in Woburn sits near 0.5% and rental vacancy near 3.4%, so a gap between a closing and a lease is the normal case rather than bad luck. Moving and storage is billed monthly and the price includes the loading, the unloading and the transport in both directions, so no separate delivery charge turns up later. Goods go into secure climate-controlled storage and come back out with the same company that loaded them, which avoids the handover problem when the move and the storage are two different contracts.

Where we work in and around Woburn
