The curb is the hard part of an Arlington move

Most towns around Boston sell you a way to hold the space in front of your house. Arlington does not sell one off the shelf. There is no moving van permit with a published fee and a published lead time, and the Street Occupancy permit the Department of Public Works issues covers licensed contractors working in the right of way, not household moves.

Two narrower routes do exist, and neither is quick. Article VII, Section 22 of the Traffic Rules and Orders lets the Chief of Police issue a special permit to park against an existing restriction for the purpose of loading and unloading. The Select Board Office can grant a temporary on-street daytime parking permit, and its own policy says the fee is set case by case. Neither publishes a price or a turnaround time, so treat both as a conversation to start early rather than a form you file the week before. Anyone who promises you a routine Arlington moving permit by Friday has not read either rule.

The rest is a set of rules that will cost you if nobody plans around them. Under Traffic Rules and Orders Article V, Section 14, no vehicle may sit on any public street in Arlington for more than one hour between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. The overnight waivers the Police Department grants are limited to three situations, an overnight guest, a disabled vehicle, or driveway construction, and a move is not one of them. See the town's own overnight parking page for the current rule. In practice this means the truck is loaded and gone the same day. We do not leave a loaded truck on an Arlington street overnight, because the town will ticket it.

The rule that catches people out is Article V, Section 1(e): you cannot park where doing so fails to leave a clear lane at least ten feet wide for passing traffic. On the narrower East Arlington and Jason Heights blocks a truck parked legally by every other measure can still fail that one, and the penalty is a ticket and a tow. It is why we scout the staging spot instead of assuming the frontage will work, and why a shuttle is sometimes the cheaper answer than three crew members walking an extra hundred feet all morning.

Arlington also keeps goods vehicles off eight residential streets outright. Article VII, Section 24 names Academy, Lake, Maple, Orvis, Brooks, Victoria, Alton and Brookdale, with an exception for delivery to a premises on the street itself. If you live on one of those, that exception is what the truck is working under, which is worth knowing before a neighbor asks.

Two more worth knowing. If a POD or a dumpster is going to occupy your driveway, that is a dumpster and pod permit through Inspectional Services on the town's online permitting portal, not a police waiver. The town's published fee schedule puts it at $24 flat and notes that parking passes are included where they apply, which makes it the cheapest documented way to hold ground on an Arlington street. And loading or unloading goods in a municipal parking lot is prohibited outright, so the town lots are not a legal staging area for a move.

Where we work in Arlington

Arlington split its old 02174 ZIP into 02474 and 02476 in 1998, and we quote the same way in both. The neighborhood matters more than the ZIP:

• East Arlington. The densest part of town and the closest to Alewife. Two-families and Victorians, many with no driveway at all, so the truck works from the street and the crew carries. Third-floor walk-ups are routine here.
• Arlington Center. Metered parking, a mix of condo conversions and apartments over the storefronts, and the Robbins Library lot nearby. Meters run Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., so a weekday load in the Center is a metered load.
• Arlington Heights. Bigger single-family houses, longer driveways, steeper grades. Driveway access is usually the good news and the slope is usually the bad news.
• Jason Heights and Brattle. Older Victorians on tight streets close to the Center. This is where the ten-foot rule bites hardest.
• Morningside and Turkey Hill. The least densely built parts of town, with the largest houses and the most driveway space, and generally a longer carry from the door to the truck.

What an Arlington move actually costs

Local moves are billed by the hour and the crew size sets the rate. The detailed rate card is on our pricing page. The figures below are planning estimates rather than quotes, and they reflect how the hours actually land in Arlington.

• One-bedroom condo, East Arlington, no elevator, street parking. Two movers, typically three to five hours. The stairs and the carry distance drive this one, not the volume.
• Two to three bedroom two-family, East Arlington or the Center. Three movers, typically five to seven hours. A second flight of stairs adds more time than an extra bedroom does.
• Four bedroom single-family, the Heights or Turkey Hill. Four movers, typically seven to nine hours, helped along by a driveway you can back into.

Arlington's housing skews expensive. Through the first half of 2026 the median single-family sale ran $1,347,500 and the median condo $969,000 on MLS PIN data, and that shows up in the work more than in the rate. Nearly thirty percent of the town's housing sits in two-to-four-unit buildings and the median unit was built in 1945, which is why the staircase decides how long a day runs more often than the square footage does. A three-hour minimum applies, time past it is billed in fifteen-minute increments, and a $50 equipment charge covers blankets, dollies and tools. Basic released value coverage at 60 cents per pound is included; Full Value Protection costs extra. Paying by card adds 3.5%, paying cash takes 5% off.

Downsizing and senior moves

A good share of Arlington moves are not people arriving, they are people leaving a house they have been in for thirty years. That job has a different shape. Most of the work is sorting rather than lifting, and the date is usually set by a senior community's move-in window rather than by a lease. Timing an Arlington move

September 1 is the immovable date around here. Most Boston leases turn over at the start of September, and Arlington sits between Cambridge and Somerville with about four in ten households renting, so crews book out weeks ahead and the streets fill with everyone else's trucks. If your date is flexible, midweek and mid-month is cheaper and calmer than a weekend at either end of the month.

Winter has its own rule. During a declared snow emergency or snow removal operations, no parking waivers are granted at all and every car has to be off the street, permit holders included. If a snow emergency lands on your date we call and move it rather than send a crew into a street the plows are about to clear. Daytime parking on posted Arlington streets is also capped at two hours between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays, which is another reason we start early rather than mid-morning.
