Wilmington, MA Movers

Local moves by the hour, run from our Woburn office

2 movers: $159 to $199 an hour

Prices and Wilmington rules checked

Move & Care moves Wilmington homes with its own crews and trucks from the Woburn office next door, at $159 to $199 per hour for two movers. We are a mover, not a broker, licensed in Massachusetts as MA DPU 31854.

The form at the top asks for your moving date, then the home size and both ZIP codes. Bigger houses get a look first, on video or on site. On a 3-bedroom house, the most common size in Wilmington, we plan three movers for 7 to 9 hours; a 4-bedroom takes four movers for 8 to 10, and a 2-bedroom condo three movers for 5 to 7.

That hourly price buys the crew's time and the truck, fuel and tolls included. A bed or table too big for a doorway comes apart and goes back together on the same clock. You pay for 3 hours at least, then in 15-minute steps, with one $50 equipment charge per move. Extras are billed apart: packing labor and boxes, Full Value Protection, and a hoist, $40 for each item on each flight. Anything scratched or broken is written on a Damage Report at the new home, before the truck pulls away.

Wilmington's by-law bans parking on its streets from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., December 1 through April 1, so a loaded truck cannot wait at the curb overnight. If a condo board wants a Certificate of Insurance, send us the exact wording and we put it on the certificate.

Who does what

The crew does

  • Three movers wrap the furniture inside the unit, take the bed frames down, and carry out by the route the building tells us to use.

You get ready

  • Ask the management office where the truck may load, book the elevator if there is one, and send us any insurance wording.

How we get the numbers: the crew's hourly rate times the hours, plus the one-time $50 charge. The low end is a quiet weekday and the shorter time, the high end a busy date and the longer time. Stairs and elevators add time; there is no stair fee.

What every price includes

A local move is billed by the hours the crew works; a move to another state has one flat price. Both come with everything on this list.

Moving-day rules in Wilmington

What Wilmington's by-laws, Public Works, the Fire Department and Casella ask of a move, and who takes care of each.

No vehicle on the street overnight in winter

  • Nothing to book
  • December 1 to April 1

From 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., December 1 through April 1, no vehicle may be left on a Wilmington street, and the by-law counts private ways open to the public and sidewalks too. A vehicle in the way of a plow is ticketed and towed at any hour, so on a snow day the truck loads from the driveway.

Wilmington By-Laws, Ch. 5 Sec. 19 (DPW parking bans) (opens a new tab)

Blocking a street needs a Road Opening Permit

  • You apply
  • Before moving day

A truck, container or dumpster that would block a public street needs a permit from the Town Manager or a department head named for it, which states the time, place and size. The town can make a police detail a condition, paid by the permit holder. Ask Public Works how far ahead to apply.

Wilmington By-Laws, Ch. 5 Sec. 6 (DPW) (opens a new tab)

Call Casella for furniture and appliances

  • You call Casella
  • A week or two before

Furniture you leave behind goes out only by appointment with Casella, the town's trash contractor, and pickups run once a week. TVs, appliances and mattresses are paid per item over the phone, with no Town Hall sticker now. Appliances usually go on Mondays, doors off, and TVs on Tuesdays.

Town of Wilmington, Trash and Recycling (opens a new tab)

Selling? Book the 26F smoke and CO inspection

  • The seller books
  • Early in the closing

The Fire Department inspects for the sale certificate only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 3 p.m., and emergency calls come first. That is four one-hour windows a week, so call as soon as the closing date is set.

Wilmington Fire Department, 26F inspections (opens a new tab)

Selling? Schedule the final water reading

  • The seller calls
  • At least 7 days before closing

The Billing Office sends Water and Sewer staff to read the meter by appointment, so someone has to let them in. The final bill takes up to 2 business days and is paid by cash, bank check, money order or the closing attorney's check, never a card.

Town of Wilmington, Treasurer and Collector (opens a new tab)

Boxes go out flat, every other week

  • Nothing to book
  • After the move

Recycling is picked up every other week on your trash day, set out by 6:30 a.m. Break cardboard down until it fits in the barrel; foam wrap and plastic bags are not taken. Recycling is required by by-law, and a trash barrel full of boxes can be left behind.

Moving in Wilmington: what to know

In-state and out-of-state rules, selling a Wilmington house, and your first weeks in town.

On this page
  1. A move inside Massachusetts, or over the New Hampshire line
  2. Selling the house
  3. What not to pack, and where it goes
  4. The first weeks in town

A move inside Massachusetts, or over the New Hampshire line

From Wilmington to Lowell, Andover or Boston, the move stays in the state, and the state requires a mover licensed by the Department of Public Utilities (DPU guide). Ours is MA DPU 31854. A move to Salem or Nashua crosses into New Hampshire, and the DPU guide says the federal FMCSA governs a mover that crosses a state line, so that trip runs under our USDOT 3212621 and MC 1018431. It is still a local move around Greater Boston, billed by the hour like one inside Massachusetts. One flat price is for long-distance moves.

Selling the house

Nearly nine in ten Wilmington homes are lived in by their owners (Census ACS 2020 to 2024), so a move often hangs on a closing. Two town appointments come before it. The Fire Department's 26F smoke and CO inspection runs only on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and afternoons, and the final water reading needs at least 7 days' notice to the Billing Office. Book both before you set the moving date with us, then keep the house open for the meter reader.

What not to pack, and where it goes

Paint thinner, solvents and other flammable chemicals stay off the truck. Wilmington collects hazardous waste once a year, usually in early May (call Public Works for the date), and takes up to 5 gallons of used motor oil at the DPW Garage on Andover Street on weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Curbside Recycling). Shredded paper goes in the trash, never the recycling.

The first weeks in town

Casella collects trash weekly and recycling every other week, both at the curb by 6:30 a.m.; after a weekday holiday the rest of the week runs a day late (Trash and Recycling). Pull the barrels back off the street once they are emptied. The Lowell and Haverhill commuter rail lines both stop in town: Wilmington at 405 Main Street and North Wilmington on Middlesex Avenue.

Questions about moving in Wilmington

Didn't see your question? Call (781) 790-4609, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., 7 days.

Two movers and a truck: $159 to $199 per hour, 3 hours minimum.

Two movers and a truck from our Woburn office cost $159 to $199 per hour in Wilmington, the low end on a quiet date. A third mover starts the rate at $199, a fourth at $239. Every move books 3 hours at least, then 15-minute steps, plus the $50 equipment charge once. A 3-bedroom Wilmington house usually takes three movers 7 to 9 hours; the table of example moves above shows the totals.

Our rate follows demand. Calm weekdays sit at the low end of the range, from $159 an hour for two movers, and the dates everyone wants, such as June weekends and moves at month's end, climb toward $199. Two Wilmington details can help you pick: set the date in your recycling week, so the flattened boxes go out with the barrel, and avoid a holiday week, when pickups run a day late. From December to April, keep a snow date in mind too.

With us, the hourly rate covers the crew, the truck, fuel and tolls. On top come the $50 equipment charge once per move, the time past the 3-hour minimum in 15-minute steps, and only what you ask for: packing labor and boxes, Full Value Protection or a hoist. Stairs add time, never a fee. One Wilmington cost is outside our bill: if your truck spot needs a Road Opening Permit and the town asks for a police detail, the permit holder pays for it.

Yes. Our crews do not load flammable liquids or explosives, so gasoline, paint thinner, propane cylinders and fireworks stay at the old house. In Wilmington, used motor oil up to 5 gallons can go to the DPW Garage on a weekday, and other household chemicals wait for the town's hazardous waste day, usually in early May. An old fridge we can move, but if it stays, Casella takes it by paid appointment, doors removed.

Wilmington's by-law asks for a Road Opening Permit when a truck, container or dumpster would block a public street, and the town can require a police detail with it. A truck that loads in your driveway does not block the street. From December 1 to April 1 nothing may stay on the street from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., and in a snowstorm anything in a plow's way is towed, so plan where the truck stands before you book the date.

Two things, both on the seller's side. Call the Fire Department for the 26F smoke and carbon monoxide inspection, held only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and call the Billing Office at least 7 days before closing for the final water reading. Book both before you pick a moving date with us.

Yes. A move into New Hampshire crosses a state line, so it runs under our federal numbers, USDOT 3212621 and MC 1018431, instead of our Massachusetts license, MA DPU 31854. Salem is about 16 miles away, so it is a local move: the same crews, billed by the hour at $159 to $199 for two movers, with the 3-hour minimum. Flat rates are for long-distance moves.

Wilmington neighborhoods we move

About 90% of Wilmington's homes are single-family houses (2021 Open Space and Recreation Plan). How and when your street was built decides where the truck stands.

  • Silver Lake

Year-round homes around a former summer lake

Silver Lake was a vacation spot for decades and is now ringed by permanent homes. The 2001 Master Plan says many early ones sat on tiny lots and narrow streets, so we check the curb and the driveway first.

    Open Space Plan, 2021
  • Town center and Main Street

Older houses on Main Street and compact center streets

Routes 38, 62 and 129 carry through traffic from Woburn and Burlington, and Main Street passes the rail station at 405 Main Street. We plan the truck in your driveway or on a side street rather than on Main Street.

  • Lowell Street and Main by the station

Apartment and condo buildings in the mixed-use district

Since 2016 the Neighborhood Mixed Use District has allowed buildings of six or more units on parts of Lowell Street and on Main Street near the train station, mostly on land that was zoned for business.

  • North Wilmington

Small homes from around 1900 near the rail station

The 2001 plan lists North Wilmington among the compact neighborhoods of small homes, and its station sits on Middlesex Avenue among shops. Small lots usually mean a short carry from the door to the truck.

  • Central Wilmington, Main to Salem St

Postwar houses on lots of a quarter to half an acre

Postwar building went mainly into the middle third of town, from Main and Lowell Streets north to Salem Street, the 2001 plan says. A driveway on these lots usually takes the truck, so it stays off the street.

    Master Plan, 2001
  • Outer areas and newer subdivisions

Half-acre lots, or clustered homes on newer streets

Southwest of Main Street and north of Salem Street, lots run over half an acre. Most newer subdivisions were built under the town's Conservation Subdivision bylaw: smaller lots, with land kept as open space.
