If you are looking for how much do movers cost in San Francisco, the answer is that it depends on the size of the shipment, how much packing is needed, the access at both addresses and any special items. A cross-country move to Chicago costs more than a local move because of the distance — about 2,130 driving miles via I-80 — but the flat-rate structure means you know the number before the truck is loaded.

When preparing your estimate we take into consideration the duration of the move, the volume of inventory, if there is stair or elevator access, special items such as safes, antiques or exercise equipment, and any additional services you may need such as packing, unpacking or storage.

Sample San Francisco to Chicago Moving Timeline

A move from San Francisco to Chicago is a multi-day haul, and interstate to boot. Unlike a local move, we schedule it around a day to load, a day to transit and a delivery window, rather than a single day.

Our team loads early on loading day in San Francisco to avoid the truck having to fight for space on the city’s narrow one-way streets and hills. The route then heads east along Interstate 80 through the Sierra Nevada, then through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and Nebraska, ending in Chicago near Lake Michigan.

Timing is also affected by the building size, elevator access, elevator reservations, and whether the truck can park close to the entrance at delivery. Whether you’re in a Chicago high-rise or a walk-up flat, these details can move the schedule more than mileage does.

Your move coordinator will keep you posted on when the truck is loaded, when it is on the road, and when to expect delivery in Chicago.

What to Know Before Moving from San Francisco to Chicago

This is a long move so planning is more important than on a local move. Timing can be affected by things like San Francisco limiting access, the winter crossing in the Sierra Nevada, and Chicago building rules.

San Francisco’s housing is dense and overwhelmingly multi-unit — the city’s housing stock is dominated by flats and multi-unit buildings, many of them older walk-ups with steep entry stairs and no driveways. There is very little free curb space in the city. The customer needs to organize an SFMTA Temporary No-Parking permit, and signage needs to be posted 72 hours in advance for unmetered spaces. In Chicago, two- and three-flats are about a quarter of the housing, and downtown high-rises need elevator reservations, loading dock times and COIs. On the Chicago side, your curb space is protected by an enforceable CDOT moving permit; informal “dibs” signs are not enforceable by the city.

Timing across seasons is important too. Winter weather may delay your Bay Area departure with chain controls and closures on I-80 over Donner Pass. Chicago prohibits parking on designated snow routes from 3–7 a.m. from December 1 through April 1. We use the right wrapping and loading plan for fragile items such as electronics and art to reduce the risk of damage on a cross-country trip.

Got something bulky or heavy to move? Let us know before moving day. Pianos (upright $160, baby grand $240), heavy safes, gym equipment and items over 200 lbs may require additional labour, special protection or hoisting at $40 per item per flight of stairs.

The Moving Process (San Francisco to Chicago)

Preparation

Step one: review your inventory and create a plan of service. We check for what is moving, what needs to be packed, what access restrictions are at both ends, and if either building needs a COI or elevator reservation. If you require packing services, we can provide full or partial packing before the move date.

Your estimate clearly shows the final scope. Timing and price can be affected by packing level, special items and building access.

Moving Day

The furniture is protected with pads and shrink wrap, the inventory is organized and loaded for safe long-haul transport and quick unloading. We’ll schedule the San Francisco departure to align with your curb reservation and the I-80 route eastbound.

This is an over-the-road move (interstate) under FMCSA jurisdiction (USDOT #3212621, MC #1018431), not a local hourly job. It goes across state lines. We plan the route, keep a written inventory, coordinate with both buildings and communicate from loading to delivery.

Delivery & Unpacking

When the truck gets to Chicago, we unload, put the furniture in the right rooms, and put together the standard items as needed. We can also take away boxes and packing materials after we finish setting up, if you ordered unpacking.

If you notice any broken or missing items please call our office immediately. The move includes basic Released Value Protection, and Full Value Protection is available at an extra cost.

F.A.Q. about moving from San Francisco to Chicago

There is no single fixed price, because a move from San Francisco to Chicago is an interstate long distance job that Move & Care quotes as a custom flat rate rather than charging by the hour. The amount you pay depends mostly on how much you are moving, how much packing you need, how accessible the truck is at both ends (stairs, elevators, distance from curb), and any specialty items like a piano or safe. The flat rate is negotiated prior to the loading day and in most cases already includes the crew, truck, fuel, tolls, mileage, standard equipment and basic Released Value Protection. Request a free estimate and we will put the price in writing for an exact figure for your home and inventory.
Most San Francisco to Chicago moves are not delivered on a one-fixed-date basis, but on a window of several days, as it is a long-haul route of approximately 2,130 driving miles, generally routed east on Interstate 80 over the Sierra Nevada and across the Great Plains into Chicago. The precise window is determined by the size of your shipment, access and elevator or loading-dock timing at both buildings, and the season: in winter, chain controls or closures on I-80 over Donner Pass can delay a Bay Area departure. Your move coordinator provides you with a realistic delivery window upfront, confirms the loading day and keeps you updated when the truck is on the road.
Yes, in most neighborhoods in San Francisco. You need an SFMTA Temporary No-Parking permit to hold curb space for the moving truck, as there is very little open street parking in the city and many blocks are steep and narrow. That's up to the customer, not the mover. SFMTA requires at least five business days' notice and, if approved, no-parking signs must be posted at least 72 hours before the move on unmetered blocks or 24 hours before on meters. You can apply and see current fees at sfmta.com. Please get us your addresses as soon as possible and we will confirm the truck size and number of feet of curb space to reserve.
That depends on your block, but for most street-side moves in Chicago you're going to want an enforceable no parking permit. The City of Chicago issues these permits via the CDOT online permit portal. The fee is often quoted as around $25 for the day of the move and you should apply at least five business days in advance and post the signs about 48 hours in advance. Informal "dibs" markers and free courtesy signs distributed by some ward offices are not city-enforceable, so they won't protect your space or get an unauthorized car ticketed or towed. If your street is a residential permit zone, there may be more rules. Please check with the City of Chicago or your ward office to find out current requirements and we will advise you on how much space the truck will need.
Yes. An interstate move is one that crosses state lines, and is regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rather than a single state agency like California or Illinois's household-goods regulator. Move & Care is licensed to work interstate with USDOT #3212621 and MC #1018431, which you can look up in FMCSA's public SAFER database. The job is priced as a flat rate for the whole move instead of by the hour, we keep a written inventory of what is loaded, and the plan is built around the long-haul route and the building access at both ends, all for practical reasons related to being an interstate move.
Yes. Heavy and specialty items are handled as part of the same flat-rate job with set charges added for the pieces that require special handling: $160 for an upright piano, $240 for a baby grand, $60 and up for items over 200 pounds, and $40 per item per flight of stairs for hoisting when something will not fit through a doorway or elevator. As soon as we get the weight and the ease of access for either location we can price safes, pool tables and the like. The most important thing is to let us know about any large, heavy or fragile items before moving day so that we can bring the right number of crew members, padding and equipment for the pickup in San Francisco and delivery in Chicago.
