📌 Quick Tips to Remember
- Use small, sturdy boxes to pack books to avoid excess weight and make them easier to carry.
- Reinforce the bottom of each box with packing tape to prevent it from breaking during the move.
- Pack books spine-down or flat to protect the binding and avoid damage.
- Avoid overpacking boxes to ensure they remain manageable and don’t strain the movers.
- Fill gaps with packing paper or lightweight items to minimize shifting during transit.
- Clearly label boxes as “Books” and mark “Fragile” for rare or valuable items.
WEIGHTY AND WORTHY
We love tablets, e-readers, and other gadgets as much as the next person, but there’s something to be said for the tactile sensation of reading an actual book—and most people would agree with that statement. Almost every home these days will have books to pack for a move, and many will have lots of books that need to be boxed. While individual books are light, It’s important to remember just how heavy a bunch of books can be, and how quickly a box of books can go from manageable to nearly unmovable.
RIGHT-SIZE YOUR BOXES
Here’s our best tip: Small boxes are for heavy things, and big boxes are for light ones. If you’ve got a bunch of pillows and stuffed animals to pack, they can all go in a big box. If you’ve got a number of books to move, don’t make the mistake of packing your whole collection into a single large box. Split it up into multiple smaller boxes—and remember, even a small box of books can weigh 30 or 40 pounds by the time all is said and done.
It all comes down to efficiency (and safety): One person can pretty easily handle a small box full of books. To load and unload a big book box, however, at least two people would be necessary. Take heed, book collectors and armchair librarians: Make it easier on yourself and your movers, and pack your books in small boxes.
💡 Tip for Rare or Collectible Books: If you’re moving rare or collectible books, consider wrapping them in acid-free paper to prevent yellowing and placing them in waterproof containers to protect against moisture.
