About Zilker (Austin, TX)

Just south of Lady Bird Lake is the south-central Austin neighborhood known as Zilker. According to documents from the City of Austin, the Zilker neighborhood planning area is described as locally known as the area bounded by Lady Bird Lake to the north, the Union Pacific Railroad tracks / West Oltorf St / South Lamar Blvd on the east, Barton Skyway on the south, and Robert E. Lee Rd / Rabb Rd / Rae Dell Ave on the west (with Robert E. Lee Rd later renamed to Azie Morton Rd by City ordinance).

For moving logistics, it helps to think of Zilker as a set of “micro-areas” and corridors with different access patterns. Common, well-known local areas in and around Zilker include:

  • Zilker Metropolitan Park (2100 Barton Springs Rd) and the park’s major destinations, including Barton Springs Pool and Zilker Botanical Garden.
  • The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail along Lady Bird Lake (well-liked, busy edges during nice-weather weekends).
  • Barton Creek and the Barton Creek Trail / greenbelt access areas near the park.
  • Umlauf Sculpture Gardens area (on the south end of the park).
  • The South Lamar Blvd corridor (a primary border/artery and a common pickup/drop-off route for buildings along the corridor).

Two realities that frequently affect moves here:

  1. Route timing matters. Barton Skyway, West Oltorf St, Barton Springs Rd, and South Lamar Blvd may all slow down during rush hour. The overall move time can be reduced by planning a start window that avoids the heaviest traffic.
  2. Event-related access changes are real. The City posts information on roadway closures linked to major events held in Zilker Metropolitan Park. Verify how your block and approach routes will be affected if your move date falls close to a significant park weekend.

Moving Process in Zilker, TX

There are three phases to moving with Move & Care: planning, the actual move, and the post-move phase. The procedures are straightforward, but parking information and Zilker access can significantly impact speed and expense.

1. Preparation

The services you select will determine what happens next once you request an estimate, confirm your move date, and lock in the plan. We can take care of packing and protection if you want full-service packing. Start packing a week or more in advance if you’re packing yourself, and keep your essentials separate for moving day.

Before moving day, we recommend confirming:

  1. Building access rules (if applicable): elevator reservations, loading instructions, gate codes, COI needs, and where the truck can legally stop for loading.
  2. Street/curb plan: Many Zilker streets rely on curb access. If you need to reserve curb space, use metered spaces, or place a moving/storage container in the public right of way, the City’s Right of Way Management process may apply.
  3. Event conflicts: Check the City’s special event street closure resources if your move date overlaps a high-traffic weekend near the park.
🅿️ Parking / permit note (City of Austin): If you need to reserve right-of-way parking or place a moving/storage container, review the City’s Right of Way Permits: Parking guidance. The City notes requests should be submitted at least 3 business days in advance, and paid at least 2 business days in advance (and moving/storage container permits are handled case-by-case).
🗺️ Event closures resource (City of Austin): For permitted street events and potential closures, use the City’s Upcoming Special Event Street Closures page.

If you’re unsure what applies to your address, your move coordinator can help you interpret building instructions and set a practical loading plan.

2. The Move

The crew shows up on time on move day, conducts a walkthrough, and protects floors and entryways. If packing is included, we pack and label, disassemble furniture as needed, pad/wrap items with moving blankets, and load efficiently for safe transport.

For Zilker moves, our main goals are to reduce carry distance and keep the truck positioned legally and safely based on your curb plan, building rules, and street conditions.

3. After the Move

At delivery, we unload into the rooms you specify, reassemble furniture, and place items where you want them. You’ll have time to check that everything arrived undamaged before we wrap up.

About Pricing

Move & Care pricing generally follows two formats: hourly rates for local moves and flat rates for long-distance moves (in Texas or interstate). The scope and logistics—inventory volume, stairs/elevators, carry distance, packing needs, and the parking/access plan at each address—will determine your final estimate.

If you want the fastest, most accurate number, share your addresses, preferred move date, any building constraints (if any), and whether you need packing. We’ll build a plan that fits Zilker’s realities and helps keep your move on schedule.

Local reference: For park-area context and major Zilker landmarks, see the City’s Zilker Metropolitan Park page.

F.A.Q. about moving in Zilker

Yes, our moving company is fully licensed for local moves within the state. While interstate movers are regulated by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), local moving companies are regulated by the state. We also have individual state licenses wherever our offices are located: Massachusetts (MC Number: 1018431), North Carolina (NCUC Number: C-3067) and Texas (TXDMV: 009636518C).

Local moves with Move and Care are generated at an hourly rate. When we determine your moving plan, we also determine the approximate labor time and the number of movers needed. The number of movers determines the hourly rate. If your move is large, more movers means faster work and lower cost.

Your quota will give you an approximate cost of the job, the actual cost will be determined by the actual time spent, which may take a little less or a little more time (we take into account 15 minute increments).

Move and Care provides two types of insurance. Basic insurance (Released Value Protection) - this is free and is included by default in any of our services. Move and Care guarantees liability for no more than 60 cents per pound per item. And Full Value Protection - this insurance means that any damage is fully covered, but there is an additional charge.

The movers will not transport perishable products, nor will they transport any hazardous objects. We also do not transport plants or weapons, and our services do not include animal transportation.
