About Elgin, TX
Elgin is a town near Austin that has a unique downtown area and quickly growing neighborhoods along major roads. There are usually two “move environments” in Elgin: (1) the historic downtown blocks, where it can be harder to get around, and (2) the newer neighborhoods, where HOA rules, driveway layouts, and staged move-in times can be important.
Elgin areas we commonly serve
Elgin isn’t like a single, steady neighborhood. When you name the place and match the right crew and truck approach, it’s easier to make plans. The City of Elgin has a list of well-known places and subdivisions, such as:
- Downtown Elgin / Downtown Historic District (older buildings, more on-street parking, and tighter curb access): City Historic District Map.
- Shenandoah (listed in the City’s residential subdivisions exhibit): City exhibit (Recent & Proposed Residential Subdivisions).
- Eagles Landing (shown in the City exhibit near County Line Road & Carlson Lane): City exhibit.
- Villages of Elm Creek (identified near US 290 & County Line Road in the City exhibit): City exhibit.
- Saratoga Farms (identified near US 290 & Hwy 95 in the City exhibit): City exhibit.
Route and road realities that affect moving day
Time and where the truck goes are just as important for most moves as packing. These are the things we plan for in and around Elgin:
- US 290 is the main road that goes east to west. TxDOT is looking into ways to make US 290 between SH 130 and SH 95 South better, which could include adding tolled main lanes along with non-tolled lanes: TxDOT project notice.
- Just east of Austin, you can expect a lot of traffic. The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority calls US 290 between SH 130 and SH 95 South a “highly congested corridor” with measured delay effects. This is why we often suggest earlier load starts for moves going from Elgin to Austin: Mobility Authority 290 Extension info.
- Major connections are often needed to get into a subdivision. The City exhibit on residential subdivisions talks a lot about US 290, SH 95, and County Line Road as growth areas’ anchors. This is helpful for planning approach routes for box trucks and coordinating arrival windows: City exhibit.
Building and access realities in Elgin
- Historic-core moves: For historic-core moves, streets may get narrower, there may be fewer big driveways, and people may have to load at the curb more often. We’ll set up carry paths, protect floors and doors, and park the truck so that the street stays clear as much as possible. For official context on the historic downtown footprint: City Historic District Map.
- Newer subdivision and apartment moves: The City’s exhibit includes several big subdivisions and a listed apartment community called “Crescent Village Apartment Homes”. During your estimate call, we’ll go over the specifics of your move, such as whether it has stairs, shared parking, limited guest spots, or HOA time limits: City exhibit.
Can you help if my subdivision has HOA rules or limited parking? Yes. When we make the schedule, we check to see if there are any HOA move windows, gate entry, and the best place for the trucks to park so the crew can work quickly without bothering neighbors.
Parking and permit notes (what’s usually true, and what to verify)
For most small home moves, you don’t need a permit as long as the truck can legally park in a driveway or on the street without blocking walkways or traffic lanes. But if any of these things are going to happen, you should check with the City before moving day to make sure you meet their requirements:
- Being in the way of a lane, sidewalk, or alley
- Asking for a temporary closure of a street or alley or reserving room that affects the public right-of-way
- Needing barriers or traffic control because the street isn’t very wide
Two official City resources that explain how Elgin handles right-of-way impacts are:
- The page for the City’s Public Works / Street Division is a good place to start when you need to know “who to call” about street and right-of-way issues.
- The City has put out a fee schedule that includes line items for street/alley closing and closure of street/parking and disruptive use of the public building/right-of-way, which is helpful context that these requests can be handled formally when needed: City Master Fee Schedule (PDF).
It’s possible that your move will have an “event-style” right-of-way impact, which could include multiple vehicles, cones or barricades, or a street or sidewalk impact. The City’s Special Event Permit form lists the types of public right-of-way effects that the City considers for permits. For moves, check with the City to see what steps need to be taken.
What if my move needs a street/curb plan? If you park properly and don’t block the public right-of-way, you don’t need a permit for many residential moves. If you think your move will affect a sidewalk or lane, check with the City’s Public Works/Street Division: City of Elgin Streets.
Moving process in Elgin, TX
There are three parts to moving with Move & Care: getting ready, moving day, and setting up at delivery.
1. Preparation
Once you request an estimate and confirm the date, we’ll make the plan based on how you can get to the building and how long the route will take. The biggest difference is the packing:
- We bring materials and pack quickly if you use our packing service, so you can focus on utilities, keys, and plans.
- Don’t damage your things or waste room when you pack yourself for a move—follow our guide: how to pack for a move.
Make sure of three local things before moving day:
- HOA or neighborhood rules (move-in hours, trailer limits, gate codes, and guest parking).
- Access for trucks (length of driveway, turning circle, steps, and elevator reservations if needed).
- Street/curb plan (legal parking, and whether you need to check with the City about right-of-way impacts): Elgin Streets (Public Works).
2. The Move
When our crew gets there on time, they protect the floors and doors, take apart furniture as needed, wrap things in moving blankets, and load the truck with a stable stack that won’t fall over. If you use storage, we set up the order of drop-offs and pick-ups to keep your schedule clear.
3. After the Move
When we deliver, we unload into rooms that have been named, put together key pieces of furniture again, and put big things where you want them. Then you and the crew leader check the items one last time before we finish.
About pricing
Pricing usually falls into two groups:
- Hourly rates are great for moves from Elgin to Elgin or to nearby cities.
- Flat rates are used for long-distance moves and depend on the distance, the size of the load, and the services offered.
The work time you estimate is based on real things that change it, like stairs, carry distance, packing scope, disassembly needs, and where to park and load the truck.

F.A.Q. about moving in Elgin, TX
Yes, our moving company is fully licensed for local moves within the state. While interstate movers are regulated by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), local moving companies are regulated by the state. We also have individual state licenses wherever our offices are located: Massachusetts (MC Number: 1018431), North Carolina (NCUC Number: C-3067) and Texas (TXDMV: 009636518C).
Local moves with Move and Care are generated at an hourly rate. When we
determine your moving plan, we also determine the approximate labor time and the
number of movers needed. The number of movers determines the hourly
rate. If your move is large, more movers means faster work and lower cost.
Your quota will give you an approximate cost of the job, the actual cost will be
determined by the actual time spent, which may take a little less or a little more time
(we take into account 15 minute increments).
