These are planning estimates for LA-to-Chicago long-distance moves. Your written estimate may be higher or lower, depending on inventory, access, packing, storage, specialty items, valuation coverage and delivery conditions.
For long-distance moves Move & Care provides flat-rate estimates in writing. This estimate is based on the information you agree to provide prior to your move: inventory list, pickup and delivery addresses, building access, parking conditions, packing level, storage needs and any specialty handling.
Some typical cost factors are:
- Inventory size: More boxes and oversized furniture require more space on the truck, more labor, and more materials to protect your belongings.
- Packing level: full packing, fragile-only packing, custom crating, unpacking and debris removal can alter the final estimate.
- Building access: Labor time can be impacted by stairs, elevator reservations, loading docks, long carries and limited move-in windows.
- Parking: if the truck cannot park close to the entrance, the crew may require additional time and equipment to finish the load or delivery.
- Specialty items: Special handling may be required for specialty items such as pianos, safes, antiques, large glass pieces, gym equipment, artwork and fragile items.
- Storage: Add short or long-term storage if your Chicago lease, closing date or delivery address is not ready.
Move & Care charges for local labor or add-on services by the hour, plus $50 for equipment. Local labor and add-on services require at least a 3-hour minimum, with billing in 15-minute increments and a standard $50 equipment charge. For transportation from LA to Chicago, your coordinator will prepare a long-distance flat-rate estimate instead of billing the interstate route by local hourly time.
A reviewed inventory and access check will provide the most accurate price. If you have changed your inventory or building conditions after the estimate is prepared, you may need to update the estimate before moving day.

Sample LA to Chicago Moving Timeline
A Los Angeles to Chicago move takes a few days in transit depending on the size of the shipment, route conditions, pickup access, delivery access, weather and whether the shipment is scheduled on a dedicated or consolidated route.
Before Pickup
Your coordinator goes over the inventory with you to confirm whether you need packing, whether your building requires a COI, parking, elevator reservations, loading dock access, stairs, long carries and restricted move hours.
If you are moving from an apartment, condo or managed building in Los Angeles, check the building’s move-out rules early. Many buildings require reservations for the elevator, Certificate of Insurance (COI) documentation, specific loading areas or limited move-out windows. Each building has its own rules and you should verify them with your property manager.
Pickup in Los Angeles
Curb rules, metered parking, loading zones, alleys, hills and dense residential streets all can affect Los Angeles pickup. LADOT has a list of temporary no-parking and tow-away sign resources. Larger right-of-way closures may require city review or permits. Know city parking requirements before moving day, especially if the truck needs curb space near apartment or condo buildings.
Official resource: LADOT temporary no-parking sign guidance
Customers are responsible for legal parking, access to the building, elevator reservations and any city or building approvals unless specifically included in the written estimate.
Transit to Chicago
When loaded, your shipment travels the interstate routes to Illinois. Weather, construction, required driver rest periods, truck access rules, and delivery scheduling at the destination can affect route timing.
For moves between states, Move & Care follows the federal moving regulations and offers valuation options. You can also check interstate mover authority through the FMCSA resources before you book.

Delivery in Chicago
Chicago delivery can involve high-rises, walk-ups, condos, apartments, two-flats, single-family homes, alleys, metered streets, residential parking zones and winter curb conditions. If your new building has an elevator or loading dock, book it before the truck arrives.
Some Chicago wards issue residential move no-parking signs, but rules vary by ward and sign type. For example, the 44th Ward notes that residential move signs are generally courtesy signs and not enforceable, while CDOT sometimes offers enforceable signs to eligible moving companies for a fee. Check your specific ward or building before delivery.

Tip: Verify Chicago parking, elevator access, loading dock hours and COI requirements before the truck departs Los Angeles. Often, delivery delays are due to building access issues, not the route itself.
What to Know Before Moving from Los Angeles to Chicago
Apartment and Condo Moves Need Access Planning
There are a lot of apartment and condo moves in both cities, but the access issues are different. If we pick up in Los Angeles, you may have narrow driveways, hillside streets, metered parking, alleys, gated buildings or limited curb space. In Chicago, delivery may mean high-rise elevators, reserving loading docks, walk-up stairs, street cleaning, residential parking rules or winter snow by the curb.
If either building will require a COI, please forward the building’s insurance requirements to your coordinator as soon as possible. If the building has the necessary certificate holder, additional insured wording, address and coverage requirements, Move & Care can prepare the COI.
Parking Must Be Planned Before Moving Day
A long-haul truck needs safe, legal space for loading and unloading. The move may take longer and require additional planning if the crew is parking far from the entrance, carrying items through a long hallway or shuttling items back and forth between the truck and building.
For Los Angeles, consult LADOT parking and no-parking guidance. If you’re in Chicago, look at your ward, building and street restrictions. If you are going to a high-rise or condo, ask if the building requires a loading dock reservation or elevator padding.
Weather Can Affect Timing
Los Angeles pickup may require planning for heat, rain and building access time. In winter, Chicago deliveries may require a bit of flexibility as snow, ice and blocked curbs can impact access for unloading. Interstate Licensing Matters
Moving from California to Illinois is an interstate household goods move. FMCSA recommends checking that an interstate mover has proper authority, insurance and a U.S. DOT number before booking.
Move & Care lists USDOT #3212621 and MC #1018431. FMCSA SAFER lets customers check interstate carrier information.
California and Illinois also have state rules covering household goods movers for moves within each state. The key customer-facing licensing point for this LA-to-Chicago page is interstate authority, with state rules providing supporting context.

The Moving Process from LA to Chicago
1. Inventory and Estimate
Your coordinator reviews your inventory, pickup address, Chicago delivery address, building access, packing needs, storage needs, and specialty items. For bigger or more complex moves, a video survey might be suggested so that the estimate is a true representation of the real move.
You receive a written flat-rate estimate for the long-distance route. If you need local labor, packing, storage, hoisting or specialty handling, those are itemized so you can see what is included.
2. Building and Parking Check
Before your move day, check if your building in LA or Chicago requires a COI, elevator reservation, loading dock window, move-in fee, HOA approval or move hours. If a COI is required, send building requirements to Move & Care prior to pickup.
Customers are responsible for arranging parking and legal truck access unless parking support is specifically listed in the written estimate.
3. Packing and Protection
If packing is included, the crew provides packing materials, protects furniture, wraps fragile items, labels boxes, and prepares items for long-distance transit. Before packing, make a note of any fragile items including artwork, antiques, electronics and glass.
Professional packing services can be added for full-home packing, fragile-only packing, kitchen packing, wardrobe boxes or specialty items.
4. Loading and Interstate Transport
On moving day, the team protects floors and doorways where needed, disassembles approved furniture, pads and shrink-wraps furniture, loads the truck and checks the inventory before leaving.
Then your shipment is on its way to Chicago along the planned route and delivery schedule. Timing can be affected by weather, road conditions, driver rest rules and building delivery windows.
5. Storage if the Chicago Address Is Not Ready
Should your lease or closing date, renovation or building approval be delayed, storage can be added prior to final delivery. This is useful if you have a set date to pick up in LA, but you don’t know when you’re moving in Chicago.
6. Delivery, Reassembly, and Final Walkthrough
During delivery the crew unloads items into rooms you specify, reassembles approved furniture, removes packing debris if included, and does a final walkthrough with you.
If you notice damage or a missing item, report it to your move coordinator right away. Your valuation method determines how claims are treated.
Protection Options for an Interstate Move
FMCSA outlines two basic valuation options for interstate moves of household goods: Released Value Protection and Full Value Protection.
Released Value Protection is the basic option and offers limited protection using the weight of the item. FMCSA says Released Value is not more than 60 cents per pound per article.
Full Value Protection offers enhanced coverage and may repair, replace or compensate for lost or damaged items subject to the terms of the coverage selected.
Official resource: FMCSA valuation coverage options
If you are moving high-value items, fragile pieces, antiques, artwork, instruments or electronics, be sure to tell your coordinator before you finalize your estimate. Some items require special packing, documentation or additional protection.
