How Much Does It Cost to Move from Chicago to Charlotte?
Our price for a move from Chicago to Charlotte is a flat charge, not an open-ended hourly bill. The fee is based on the amount of your inventory, the access circumstances at both the origin and destination, and any extra services you choose.
A Chicago high-rise load-out with a designated dock to a Charlotte elevator building is not the same task as a walk-up delivery with a tight parking window and a long stair carry. The figures provided are estimates to help you plan; your precise flat charge is locked in writing after a free pre-move consultation.
Your flat charge covers the crew, the truck, loading, transport, unloading, positioning of things in your agreed rooms, furniture protection, and Basic Released Value Protection. Add services such as packing, unpacking, and storage can be customized, for example only packing your kitchen or only fragile things. The more precise the inventory, the more accurate the quote.
Estimated cost ranges by home size
| Home size | Estimated range* |
|---|---|
| Studio / 1 bedroom | ~$3,300–$4,800 |
| 2–3 bedrooms | ~$4,500–$6,500 |
| 4+ bedrooms | ~$6,500–$8,000+ |
*These are industry estimates, not a guaranteed price. Your actual cost depends on confirmed weight, access, and services.
What affects your final price
The primary criteria are the amount of your inventory, the access circumstances at both the origin and destination, and any extra services you choose. Stairs, elevators, long carries, packing, storage, specialty items, and building rules can all affect the amount of work required.
At Move and Care, long-distance moves are priced as a flat rate based on your confirmed inventory and access, not by the hour — so the estimate reflects the actual job rather than a clock.

A $50 equipment charge applies. Card payments carry a 3.5% processing fee, and cash payments receive a 5% discount.
The only way to get an accurate number for your home is a written estimate based on your specific details.

Moving Out of Chicago: Local Logistics Checklist
Most of the avoidable cost and delay on a Chicago move comes from building and street rules discovered too late. An elevator reservation, a parking permit, or a lease-notice deadline isn't a problem on its own — finding out about it the morning of the move is. Here's what to line up early.
CDOT truck parking permits
For Chicago curb space, the City issues a CDOT enforceable “No Parking” moving permit through the city permit site with signage displayed in advance. A moving truck parked on a Chicago public street generally requires a Chicago moving truck parking permit from the Chicago Department of Transportation.
You are responsible for securing the permit. Move and Care advises on what to request and when, but does not obtain the permit for you.
High-rise COIs and elevator reservations
We move customers out of Chicago walk-ups, elevator buildings, condos, and high-rises that often require a Certificate of Insurance before the crew may use the service elevator. If your building has specific needs, let us know in advance and we will make the necessary arrangements, including the COI.
Send your building name, certificate holder wording, required coverage limits, moving rules, elevator reservation details, and submission email as early as possible.
Lake Shore Drive route restrictions
Commercial vehicles and moving trucks are restricted on Lake Shore Drive, which affects how a moving truck routes through the city on move day. This is a general rule; a professional interstate mover plans the route around it, so you don't have to.
Tenant notice periods and city sticker
If you're renting, Chicago's Fair Notice Ordinance sets tiered notice periods for ending a lease — commonly 30, 60, or 120 days, depending on how long you've lived in the unit. Check your deadline early so notice isn't the thing that holds up your move. This is informational, not legal advice; confirm your situation with the official source.
If you have a Chicago city vehicle sticker, review the Chicago City Vehicle Sticker rules when you move out of the city and register your vehicle in North Carolina.
Send your building's COI requirements and access details early, and we'll help you sort out what to line up before move day.
Licensed, Insured, and FMCSA-Compliant Interstate Movers
Move and Care is licensed to conduct interstate moves under federal authority. The moving industry is full of scams, so before you book anyone we recommend checking their license with the FMCSA Protect Your Move resources.
Interstate moves are federally regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Under those rules, an interstate mover must give you a written estimate, a Bill of Lading, and the “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet detailing your FMCSA consumer rights.
How to verify an interstate mover
Every legitimate interstate mover has a USDOT number you can look up on the FMCSA website before you book. Checking it takes a minute and rules out unregistered operators.
Move and Care's credentials for this route:
- USDOT #3212621 and MC #1018431 — interstate operating authority.
- NCUC #C-3067 — North Carolina intrastate authority at the destination end.
These numbers are what “licensed” actually means here — verifiable registration you can confirm yourself, not a slogan.
Your rights and the Bill of Lading
๐ Protection: Each relocation includes basic Released Value Protection at no charge – that’s the minimum responsibility required by federal law. Full-Value Protection can be upgraded for larger value inventories.
The Bill of Lading is your contract; don't sign until the pickup and delivery details, services, and estimate match what you agreed to. On coverage: Basic Released Value Protection (60¢ per pound per article) is included at no extra cost. It's the legal minimum, not full reimbursement — so a heavy item's basic payout can be far below its replacement value. Full Value Protection is available for an added charge if you want broader coverage. Ask which items you'd want covered at the higher level before move day.
Move forward with a licensed interstate mover — verify the USDOT number, then request your estimate.
Why People Are Moving from Chicago to Charlotte
That’s why local knowledge counts upon arrival. Charlotte has apartments, houses, elevator buildings, high-rises, and neighborhoods where access can vary by address. Parking, building rules, stair carries, and elevator reservations may all affect how the delivery is planned.
Cost of living and property taxes
The clearest difference is property tax. Illinois's average property tax rate is around 2.08%, while North Carolina averages closer to 0.77% — though rates vary by county, so a move from Cook County to Mecklenburg County won't match the state averages exactly.
Housing costs are generally lower in Charlotte as well, which is a large part of why the route is popular.
Climate and lifestyle
Milder winters are the other common draw — fewer months of Chicago cold on the North Carolina end.
Move and Care has a Charlotte office to handle the delivery side of the move.
What to Expect During Your Interstate Move
The uncertainty on a long-distance move usually comes from not knowing the order of events or when things arrive. Here's how the Chicago-to-Charlotte process runs, step by step.
- Booking and written estimate. You submit your move details through the form, and a manager follows up with an approximate flat-rate price based on your confirmed inventory and access.
- Packing and loading in Chicago. The crew identifies fragile, heavy, and take-apart items, then loads. This is where the Chicago move-out logistics matter — confirm your CDOT permit and send your building's COI and elevator details ahead of time so loading isn't held up.
- Transport to Charlotte. Your belongings travel the roughly 750-mile route across state lines.
- Delivery and unpacking in Charlotte. Because interstate delivery is scheduled as a window rather than a fixed date, you'll get an approximate delivery window, not an exact day. FMCSA rules allow for delivery spreads, so plan around a range.
One booking detail worth knowing early: interstate moves require a 2-week cancellation notice for a deposit refund. Confirming your date early keeps that window on your side.
Start with a written estimate so the plan is set before move day.
