How much does it cost to move from Boston to Charlotte?

Boston to Charlotte is priced as one flat rate for the whole job, agreed before the truck is loaded. The estimate is built from your inventory, the access at both addresses and the services you actually want. These are our typical starting figures by home size.

These are starting points for a typical load, not a quote. Two three-bedroom moves can differ by a thousand dollars on stairs, long carries and how much is packed by the time the crew arrives.

A $50 equipment charge for blankets, dollies and tools applies to long-distance jobs. Card payments carry a 3.5% processing fee and there is a 5% discount for paying cash. Deposits are refundable with two weeks of notice on an interstate move. Known extras have set prices: an upright piano is $160 and a baby grand $240, items over 200 lbs start at $60, and hoisting is $40 per item per flight of stairs. Boxes start at $6.50, tape is $7 and shrink wrap is $10.

How the move runs, day by day

The estimate comes first. A manager goes through your inventory, both addresses, the access at each end and your dates, then issues a written estimate with the federal booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.

On loading day the crew protects and loads the truck in Boston. If you have booked packing it happens before this, charged by the hour with materials priced separately. Furniture that needs disassembly to leave the building is handled as part of the load when it fits the plan.

Then the drive. About 840 miles down I-95 and I-85 is roughly 15 to 16 hours of driving, and federal hours-of-service rules cap a driver at 11 hours inside a 14-hour working day. That is two driving days, not one, and it is the mechanism behind the two to three day window on your estimate. It is not a guarantee of an arrival hour, and no honest mover will give you one on a lane this long.

At the Charlotte end the crew unloads into the rooms you mark. Unpacking, if you booked it, happens then. If anything arrives damaged, tell the crew on the spot and ask for a Damage Report before they leave. If you find it later, call the office within 96 hours.

What the flat rate covers, and what it does not

Covered in the flat rate: the crew, the truck, fuel, tolls, transport, furniture protection with blankets and equipment, and basic released-value protection. Basic coverage is included at no extra cost, and it is worth being clear about what it is: liability limited to 60 cents per pound per article. That is not full insurance. Full Value Protection is available for an additional charge and has to be arranged before the move.

Confirmed separately, and only included if it is written on your estimate: packing labor, packing materials, unpacking, custom crating, storage, extra stops, labor-only help, white glove service, piano and specialty item handling, heavy items over 200 lbs, hoisting, appliance preparation and a certificate of insurance. Parking permits, elevator reservations and loading dock approval are not on that list because they are not ours to arrange: you secure them, and we tell you what to ask for. Movers cannot disconnect water or gas lines, and cannot carry flammable liquids, firearms, explosives or gasoline and propane containers.

Parking, buildings and access at both ends

This is where a long-distance move actually goes wrong, and securing it is the customer's job, not ours. We advise; you arrange it. Better access means a faster move. If the truck cannot get close, the crew parks further away and carries longer, which eats the day at the loading end and can push the delivery window out. Your flat rate is fixed once the estimate is agreed, so access does not change the price on its own, but a major change of scope does mean the estimate has to be looked at again.

The Boston end. The city issues a Moving Truck Permit that reserves two spaces from 7am to 5pm. It costs $69, or $109 where the spaces are metered. Apply online at least 15 days ahead and no more than eight weeks ahead, and the signs have to go up at least 48 hours before the move. Boston describes the permit as recommended rather than legally required, but on a narrow street it is the difference between a 40-foot carry and a 400-foot one. Two Boston specifics worth knowing. Moving trucks are banned outright from Storrow Drive and the other river parkways, which are restricted to cars: the low bridges there are why box trucks end up on the news every September, and a route that avoids them is not optional. And a North End address needs City permission before you can even apply online, so call 617-635-2560 first rather than starting with the form.

The Charlotte end. This is stricter than the old version of this page suggested. Charlotte DOT requires a Right-of-Way Use Permit to occupy the street, and the trigger is more than five minutes, not a couple of hours. Moving vans are named on the city's own permit page. Allow 72 hours for a standard permit, longer if a full lane closure is needed, and note that occupancy is not allowed during weekday peak hours, 7am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm. If you are moving into an Uptown or South End building, ask the property manager early for the dock and elevator rules and for the exact certificate of insurance wording they want. We can provide a certificate when a building requires one, but not every building asks, and the building decides the wording.

The route itself

The practical line is I-95 south out of Massachusetts, then I-85 from Petersburg in Virginia into Charlotte, at about 840 miles. The inland alternative through I-81 and I-77 runs closer to 905 miles, roughly 8% further, and is used when weather or incidents make the coastal corridor slower rather than as a default. Trucks are banned from most New York City parkways, so a moving truck never takes the car route a driver would.

Timing across the year matters more in Boston than in Charlotte. Boston's Move-In Day is 1 September every year, and the surrounding week is the hardest time to get a truck, a permit or a parking space in the city. If your dates are flexible, moving outside that window is the single cheapest decision you can make on this route.
