How much does it cost to move from Boston to Denver?

Most Boston to Denver moves fall between $3,800 and $9,500, set as one flat rate before you book. Where you land depends on how much you are shipping, how much packing you want us to do, and whether anything needs special handling.

Two things sit outside the flat rate by default: packing labor, which is billed hourly, and packing materials, with boxes from $6.50, tape at $7 and shrink wrap at $10. A $50 equipment charge for blankets, dollies and tools is shown on every long-distance estimate.

Everything else is quoted only if you ask for it: storage, custom crating, extra stops, hoisting at $40 per item per flight of stairs, items over 200 lbs from $60, an upright piano at $160 or a baby grand at $240, and a Certificate of Insurance when a building requires one. Nothing on that list reaches your bill unless it is on the estimate you signed.

We calculate the rate from a video survey of your rooms, a check of building access at both ends, and a note of any special-care items such as pianos, gym equipment or artwork. Pay in cash and we take 5% off the flat rate on your estimate.

What does basic coverage actually pay?

Basic released-value protection is included at no extra cost, and it limits our liability to 60 cents per pound per article. That is a legal minimum rather than full insurance, and it is worth understanding before you decide. Released value is priced by weight, not by value, so for a television weighing 40 pounds the cap works out at $24 regardless of what the set cost. That cap is why most people moving a furnished home take Full Value Protection instead, which is available for an additional charge and settles differently. We explain both before you sign.

If something is damaged, tell the crew while they are still on site and they can complete a Damage Report before they leave. If you find it later, call the office within 96 hours so we can open a report.

How long does a Boston to Denver move take?

A Boston to Denver move takes 4 to 7 days from pickup to delivery for most households, and that window is written into your estimate before you book. The route is about 1,970 miles. A car drives it in roughly 29 hours; a loaded moving truck averages nearer 50 miles an hour once fuel stops, the mandatory 30-minute break and metro traffic at both ends are counted, which puts the line haul closer to 38 driving hours. Federal hours-of-service rules cap a driver at 11 hours of driving inside a 14-hour window after 10 consecutive hours off duty, so those hours spread across about three and a half driving days. Loading and delivery share the first and last of them, which puts most moves at four to five days. We write the window to seven so that weather or an access problem does not turn a delay into a broken promise.

It is a confirmed delivery window, not a guaranteed arrival hour. Transit can move with inventory, packing readiness, access and parking at either end, building rules, traffic, weather and road conditions. If a date shifts, we tell you rather than letting you find out on delivery day.

Day by day

• Before the move. Video survey, written estimate, and a packing plan if you want one. We can deliver boxes and supplies ahead of the date.
• Loading day in Boston. The crew protects floors and doorways, pads and wraps furniture, handles agreed disassembly, and loads for a long haul rather than a short hop.
• In transit. Your coordinator sends a GPS location update each day the truck is on the road, so you are not chasing us for it.
• Delivery day in Denver. We unload room by room, reassemble what we disassembled, place furniture where you want it, and take away the debris from the materials we supplied.

The route: I-90, I-80 and I-76

The truck runs I-90 west out of Massachusetts to Chicago, picks up I-80 across Iowa and Nebraska, then turns onto I-76 at Big Springs, Nebraska for the last 187 miles, which end at I-70 in Arvada on Denver's northwest edge. Nine states in all: Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado.

This lane does not cross the Rockies. I-80 carries on into Wyoming, but our route leaves it before that, so mountain-pass closures are not normally a factor. The weather risk on this corridor is ground blizzards on I-80 in Nebraska and I-76 in northeastern Colorado, roughly November through April. March is Denver's snowiest month, averaging 8.8 inches in the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, with April second at 6.1 inches. Do I need a parking permit in Boston or a COI in Denver?

In Boston, a moving-truck permit costs $69 for one day and covers two non-metered spaces including the required signs. In Denver, many buildings ask for a Certificate of Insurance and an elevator reservation instead. Securing permits and reservations is the customer's responsibility. We advise on what each end needs and we can provide the COI, but we do not obtain permits or reserve elevators on your behalf.

In Boston, you can reserve the curb through the Parking Clerk. A moving-truck permit costs $69 for one day and covers two non-metered spaces including the two required signs, with an extra $40 if the spaces are metered. Apply online between 15 days and 8 weeks ahead, or in person from 3 days out. The signs go up 48 hours before the reservation starts. This applies across the city, not only in historic neighborhoods. Fees are current as of September 2026; confirm them with the Parking Clerk before you apply. If you are moving around September 1, book early: Boston's lease cycle turns over that week and both permits and crews go quickly.

In Denver, many apartment buildings and downtown condos ask for a Certificate of Insurance and an elevator reservation, and some blocks need a street occupancy permit or a meter reservation from the city. Not every building asks, so check with your property manager early. If a COI is required, send us the building name, the property manager's contact, the certificate-holder and additional-insured wording, the coverage limits, the move date and the submission email. We provide a COI where the building's requirements match our policy, and we tell you straight away if they do not. Certificate holder and additional insured are not the same thing, and buildings usually want the second.

If parking is not secured we still work the day. The crew parks farther out, carries longer, or waits for building access. A flat rate does not move because the day runs long. It can move if the access is not what we surveyed: a long carry, a stair flight, or a building restriction we did not know about. We tell you before the crew starts, never after. Tell us about a tight street or a difficult building while we are still pricing the job.

What we cannot load

Federal rules keep hazardous materials off the truck: flammable liquids, gas and propane containers, explosives, oxidizers and corrosives. Our own policy adds firearms, and our crews are not allowed to disconnect water or gas lines. Drain fuel from mowers and grills, empty propane tanks, and have any appliance that needs plumbing or gas work disconnected before move day.

What changes when you land in Denver

Denver sits at 5,280 feet, exactly one mile above sea level, and the air is far drier than Boston's. Solid-wood furniture, instruments and veneered pieces can move slightly as they adjust. We pad and wrap those items for transport, and we can wrap electronics, artwork and leather against the moisture swing on request, with materials priced separately.

The flow from Boston to Denver is real but modest.
