Denver buildings, leases and the curb
Denver apartment towers and HOA communities can set the hours a move may hold the elevator or the dock, and some ask for a Certificate of Insurance before the truck pulls up. Ask the manager for all three when you sign, forward the insurance wording to us, and the certificate we issue will match it. Street space for the truck is yours to arrange; we can tell you how much curb to plan for.
Renting? Denver requires a residential rental license for any home rented for 30 days or more, and a unit without one cannot legally be rented. Type the address into Denver's online permitting center before you sign. The landlord also has to give you the city's Tenant Rights and Resources notice with the lease (City and County of Denver).
Two driving days on I-15 and I-70
From downtown Los Angeles the truck takes I-10 east for 27 miles, then I-15 north over the Cajon Pass, across the Mojave and past Las Vegas into Utah. After 469 miles on I-15 it turns onto I-70 for the last 493, through Utah's canyon country and over the Rockies into Denver. Federal hours-of-service rules stop a truck driver after 11 hours at the wheel, and this route needs about 14, so your things spend one night on the truck between the two driving days. Your price stays the same if the drive runs long.
West of Denver, I-70 passes under the Continental Divide through the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel, at an average elevation of 11,112 feet, in an area that averages 315 inches of snow from November through April (CDOT). When traffic backs up inside, CDOT stops vehicles from entering until the queue clears, usually about 20 minutes. It happens most on weekends, from January to March and in July and August (CDOT tunnel metering). Those holds and storms are the reason for the spare days in the delivery window.
- Los Angeles, loading day: walk the crew through each room, point out what comes apart and what stays, then sign the bill of lading.
- The road: two driving days over I-15 and I-70, with the load parked overnight in between.
- Denver, delivery: tell the crew which room takes each piece, and mark anything damaged on the Damage Report before you sign.
What to clear out before loading in Los Angeles
Our crews do not load gasoline, propane cylinders or other flammable liquids, explosives or firearms. They also never unhook water or gas lines, so get the washer and any gas dryer or range disconnected first. City of Los Angeles residents can drop paint, pool chemicals, propane cylinders and other household hazardous waste at a S.A.F.E. Center at no charge, up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit. Staff unload the car and ask for the address the waste came from (LA Sanitation).
Your car and the clock in Denver
A car you register in Denver County will need an emissions inspection: the city lists moving to Colorado from another state as one of the times a test is required, and Air Care Colorado runs the stations (City and County of Denver). Mountain time in Denver runs one hour ahead of Pacific time, which matters when our Irvine office gives you a delivery hour.
