Parking the truck at a Raleigh address
When the only room for the truck is a metered or timed space, the City's right-of-way staff send moving vans to Raleigh Parking for a parking pass. Once the request is approved, you pick the pass up at the Parking office at 310 W. Martin Street and keep it on display the whole time the truck stands there (City of Raleigh right-of-way services). Taking over a full lane or the sidewalk is a different right-of-way permit, filed through the City's permit portal with a traffic control plan, so build the unload around legal spaces instead. Apartment and condo communities set their own move-in hours, elevator bookings and insurance wording. Ask the leasing office for all three, forward us the insurance wording, and the Certificate of Insurance we issue will match it.
Two driving days on I-95 and I-85
The truck leaves Boston west on the Mass Pike, turns south through Connecticut and joins I-95. From there it crosses New York, follows the New Jersey Turnpike, passes under Baltimore harbor on I-895, and loops the Capital Beltway to I-395 and Virginia. In Virginia it leaves I-95 for I-85, crosses into North Carolina and finishes on US 1. We count 710 miles because the figure follows roads a moving truck may drive, a few miles longer than a car's shortest route. Federal hours-of-service rules end a truck driver's day at 11 hours of driving, and this trip needs close to 12, so it is split across two driving days. Fuel and every toll on the way are part of your rate.
- Boston, loading day: show the crew what stays, which pieces come apart and which boxes should come off first, then sign the bill of lading.
- On the road: two driving days south, with one overnight stop in between.
- Raleigh, delivery: be at the house on the agreed day, name the room for each piece, and note any damage on the Damage Report before you sign.
Trash carts at your new address
Raleigh's garbage and recycling carts belong to the City and stay with the house: residents who move out are asked to leave them in the yard or the garage. If your new place has none, ask Solid Waste Services for carts only after you move in, because the City does not deliver them to a vacant house. The trucks are automated, so a bag set next to the cart stays on the curb; hold it for the next pickup or take it to a Wake County convenience center, which accepts extra bags at no charge (Raleigh Solid Waste Services).
North Carolina license, plates and insurance
Driving in North Carolina as a new permanent resident means switching to an NC license within 60 days, and that license has to come before the car's paperwork. Registration is due when you take a job in North Carolina or when the reciprocity period with your old state runs out, usually 30 days, whichever comes first. The plate agency asks for a North Carolina insurance policy and does not accept an out-of-state one (NCDMV, new to North Carolina). Since October 1, 2026, the DMV no longer issues plate stickers or printed registration cards; you download the registration as a PDF instead. Bring the Massachusetts title to the plate agency, or the registration card if a lender holds the title.
