The road from Los Angeles to Anaheim

Measured between the two city halls, the drive is 30 road miles. The route we measured takes US 101 out of downtown, then the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) for about 21 miles, and leaves it at the Lincoln Avenue exit. Freeway traffic changes how long the day runs, so pick your start time with the rush hours in mind.

Before you hand back the Los Angeles keys

California gives renters a pre-inspection. After your notice, the landlord owes you a written offer of one, which is your chance to fix things before you move out. When you are out, the landlord has 21 days to return the deposit or send a list of deductions. The rules are in the California Courts guide to security deposits. Book the inspection before moving day, while you still have time to make repairs.

Power, water and bulky items in Anaheim

Anaheim Public Utilities is owned by the city and supplies both electricity and water. New customers apply online, and an online application can take up to a week; for a sooner date, call customer service. The city may ask for a security deposit after a credit check before it connects the power, and a credit letter from your last utility can get it waived. See Start, Stop, Move Service.

If the old couch or a fridge is not coming with you, Anaheim homes get bulky item pickup at no charge from Republic Services: three pickups a calendar year, up to 20 items each, booked at (714) 238-2444. The city lists it in its clean-up program guide.

Your new address and the DMV

State law asks you to tell the DMV your new address within 10 days of moving, even on a move inside California, and filing the change costs nothing, online, by mail or at an office. Start it on the DMV page for license and ID updates.

Curb space and building rules

At both buildings you hold the curb, the elevator and any dock, and we bring the truck and the crew. Anaheim sweeps every street once a week, weather permitting, so check the day on your new block with the city's trash and sweeping lookup before you pick a date. If an Orange County HOA or a Los Angeles high-rise wants a Certificate of Insurance, send us its exact wording and we issue the COI to match.

How the day runs

Reserve the buildings. You hold the curb and the elevator at both ends for the day.
Wrap and load. Furniture is padded in the room, carried out and loaded on our truck.
