How Much Does It Cost to Move from Boston to Seattle?
The cost of relocating from Boston to Seattle will depend on the size of the shipment, packing, access at both homes, storage needs, delivery timing, and specialty items. Move & Care offers flat-rate long-distance estimates for Boston-to-Seattle moves, so the pricing is based on your real inventory and service plan, not a general route average.
| Size of the Move | Typical Flat-Rate Planning Range* | Estimated Delivery Window |
|---|---|---|
| Studio / Small 1 Bedroom | $3,500 – $7,500 | 7–10 days |
| Large 1 Bedroom / Small 2 Bedroom | $5,500 – $9,500 | 7–11 days |
| Large 2 Bedroom | $7,500 – $12,500 | 8–12 days |
| 3 Bedroom Apartment / Townhouse | $10,000 – $16,000 | 9–14 days |
| 4 Bedroom or Larger Home | $15,000+ | 10–14+ days |
*These are planning ranges, not a final price. Your Seattle written estimate is based on inventory, packing level, stairs, elevators, walking distance, parking access, storage, specialty items, and delivery conditions.
A flat-rate estimate for a move from Boston to Seattle includes the moving staff, truck, fuel, mileage, tolls, standard moving equipment, basic valuation coverage, and the agreed pickup and delivery plan. If your building requires a COI, Move & Care can prepare it for you once your building provides the specific certificate criteria.
Move & Care cost may include hourly billing with a 3-hour minimum, 15-minute increments, and a $50 equipment charge for local labor components or additional local work. For the interstate portion of the move, your coordinator will provide a long-distance flat-rate estimate based on the move plan.
The only way your estimate can vary is if the scope of the relocation changes — for example, if you add more items, add packing, ask for storage, include a specialty item, the access is different than what was given, or the building has a new delivery requirement.

What Affects a Boston to Seattle Moving Estimate?
The road is long, yet distance is only part of the price. The biggest variation in price comes from the work that has to be done before the truck leaves Boston and when it gets to Seattle.
- Inventory size: The more furniture, boxes, and loose items, the more labor, truck space, packing material, and loading time needed.
- Packing level: Full packing, fragile-only packing, custom crating, and unpacking can be added to the estimate.
- Building access: The crew plan is impacted by walkups, elevators, loading docks, long carries, small passageways, and reserved move windows.
- Parking access: If the truck cannot park close to the door, the relocation may take longer or require a different setup of equipment.
- Storage: If your Boston lease finishes before your Seattle property is complete, you may need storage.
- Specialty items: Pianos, safes, antiques, big furniture, artwork, and fragile items may require additional labor, materials, or specialty pricing.
- Hoisting: Hoisting fees may apply when an item cannot be securely passed through regular access and the site allows for hoisting.
- Valuation option: Released Value Protection is not Full Value Protection. Your coordinator can explain either before the relocation.
Sample Boston to Seattle Moving Timeline
Before Moving Day
Your coordinator checks your inventory, pickup address, delivery address in Seattle, building requirements, parking situation, and chosen delivery timing. If your building requires a COI, please submit the building’s sample certificate or exact requirements in advance so that we can have the document ready prior to move day.
Boston clients should also check the city’s parking permit instructions for moving trucks. Boston says a permit for a moving truck is not legally required, but it does reserve a valid parking spot. Standard permits allow two spots beginning at 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Applications must be submitted online at least 15 days prior to the move and in person at least 3 days in advance.
Pickup in Boston
The crew will wrap items, protect furnishings, load the vehicle, label inventory, and prepare the shipment for long-distance transportation. Access in Boston can be impacted by small streets, dense parking, walkups, and lease-turnover traffic. Boston also advises that low clearance and a 10-foot height restriction mean moving vehicles are not allowed on Storrow Drive.
If you are moving in late August or early September, plan further ahead than you normally would. The City of Boston cautions that most leases turn over in early September, and that move-in activity on Sept. 1 can impact traffic and parking in neighborhoods with a large student population.
Transit to Seattle
The truck drives west on the route chosen for the shipment, the schedule, the vehicle size, and the road conditions. Timing is subject to weather, construction, traffic, and delivery time windows. Your coordinator will keep your relocation on track to the specified delivery schedule.
Delivery in Seattle
Curb space might need to be planned before the vehicle comes for Seattle delivery. Seattle’s Temporary No Parking Zone process can be used to reserve curb space for moving vans. Seattle says moving trucks and other commercial vehicles might need a Restricted Area Parking permit for that operation.
If you are using a portable moving or storage container in Seattle, review Seattle’s storage container permit guidelines. Seattle requires a Street Use permit for portable moving/storage containers in the public right-of-way.
Size and time of truck matter for downtown Seattle deliveries. Vehicles 30 feet or longer have specific weekday hours in Seattle’s Downtown Traffic Control Zone. Clarify with your coordinator if further planning is needed for entry to the delivery address.
What to Know Before Moving from Boston to Seattle
Boston Pickup Conditions
Parking is sometimes an issue with apartments, condos, and small residential streets when moving in Boston. The city enables residents to reserve space for a moving truck, but it is the customer’s responsibility to find legal parking or designated curb space when necessary. Move & Care can advise on the type of access the crew will require for your goods and building layout.
Boston customers should not assume the route based on passenger-car navigation. Storrow Drive has a low clearance restriction, and Boston specifically cautions that moving vehicles cannot use it.
Seattle Delivery Conditions
Delivery in Seattle might be challenging due to slopes, limited curb space, managed apartment buildings, loading docks, elevators, and temporary parking restrictions. Check with the building manager to confirm those restrictions before delivery if your Seattle building requires an elevator reservation, loading dock window, move-in fee, floor protection, or COI.
Move & Care can draft the COI, but the building must give the certificate holder, additional insured wording, coverage criteria, and delivery instructions.
Weather and Seasonality
Winter moves may require a bit more flexibility. Boston snow problems can impair parking and curb access; Seattle winter weather can affect delivery routes and neighborhood street conditions. Use official local instructions for seasonal planning such as Boston snow emergency parking and Seattle’s snow plow route information.
Building Access, COI, and Parking Responsibilities
Move regulations are common in many apartments and condos in Boston and Seattle. These rules are not the same in every building, so they should be checked before moving day.
- Ask whether the building needs a COI.
- If needed, reserve the freight elevator or service elevator.
- Check authorized move hours.
- Ask if the building needs protection for floor, wall, or entryway.
- Check loading dock access or loading-zone rules.
- Reserve legal parking or curb space as required.
- Tell your coordinator whether there are stairs, long halls, tight turns, or items that are big.
The importance of customer parking accountability is that city permits and building access authorizations are normally provided to residents, tenants, property owners, or approved occupants. Move & Care can help with planning, but the customer is responsible for verifying that the truck has legal access at pickup and delivery.
Licensing and Protection for Interstate Moves
Because a Boston to Seattle move crosses state boundaries, federal interstate moving regulations apply. The FMCSA says interstate movers need to be registered with the federal government and hold a U.S. DOT number. Move & Care lists USDOT #3212621 and MC #1018431 for interstate moving authority.
Massachusetts and Washington likewise regulate household goods movers operating in the state, but both states refer customers to federal services for interstate moves. Massachusetts guidance is located on the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities web page. Washington guidance is located on the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission web page.
Basic Released Value Protection is included. If you require a higher level of protection for your shipment, Full Value Protection is available. If you are shipping fragile, high-value, antique, or specialty items, ask your coordinator to clarify the protection options available before the estimate is finalized.
