*Based on moves from Boston, MA to Jersey City, NJ in the past few months. The final price depends on the availability of items, how easy it is to get to them (stairs, elevator, long carry, parking), the date and season, and any special items like pianos or safes.
Move & Care runs a flat rate for interstate moves. The number on your written quote is the number you pay—no fuel add-ons, no weekend surcharges. Your flat rate includes our crew, truck, tolls, fuel, basic valuation coverage, our standard equipment kit, and a Certificate of Insurance (COI) for origin and destination buildings when needed.
For moves between states, Move & Care charges a flat rate. There are no extra charges for fuel or weekends on your written quote. The number on your quote is the amount you pay. Your flat rate covers our crew, truck, tolls, fuel, basic valuation coverage, our standard equipment kit, and, if needed, a Certificate of Insurance (COI) for the buildings at the start and end of the move.
We figure out your rate based on the distance (about 226 miles on a truck-legal route), your detailed inventory, any special items (like an upright piano for $160, a baby grand for $240, or a single item over 200 pounds for $60), and any extra services you want, like full or partial packing or storage/overnight hold. The fastest way to lock in your number is to ask for a free estimate. We'll do a quick video survey and send you a written quote that you have to accept.
You can do a live or FaceTime visual survey for free.
It's easy to pay: cash gets a 5% discount, and cards have a 3.5% processing fee. Your deposit locks in your date and flat rate.
Most moves from Boston to Jersey City are done the same day. We want to load up in Boston early, then take the Mass Pike and I-84 to a Hudson River crossing that trucks can use (the Lincoln Tunnel or the GWB) and then down the Turnpike to JC. Delivery may have to wait until the same evening or the next morning because of bigger inventories, elevator windows, or traffic in downtown. Your coordinator keeps you up to date in real time.
The distance is about 226 miles, and it usually takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes to drive it. Around New York City, traffic patterns can change, which is why we plan truck-legal routes and departure times.
In Boston, you don't need a permit by law, but it's a good idea to get one on busy or narrow streets. A one-day permit (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) saves space on the curb. See the City's instructions and apply online. The City of Jersey City's Division of Parking takes care of on-street parking. For moves, use Temporary No Parking signs or meter bags (posting and lead times apply). Check out the Division of Parking overview and the TNPS/meter-bag details: Parking (City of Jersey City) and No Parking Signs & Meter Bags (PDF). We will give property managers advice, truck specifications, signs where needed, and COIs.
When you move between states, you have two options for how much your things are worth. The cost of Released Value is $0, and it covers $0.60 per pound per item. Full Value Protection makes the mover pay for the full value of items that are lost or damaged (the amount of the deductible varies). Read the FMCSA's Liability & Protection page and the official “Your Rights & Responsibilities When You Move” booklet.
Truck-legal routing matters: Routing for trucks is important: Some NYC tunnels (like Holland) are off-limits to commercial trucks. We plan to keep your timeline and compliance intact by using the Lincoln Tunnel or the George Washington Bridge. Your coordinator will let you know which crossing is best for your building window.
We take care of the finishing touches, like putting your bed back together, protecting your blankets (which are included), placing your things in each room, and taking away the trash. This way, you can relax instead of fighting with boxes.
Quick video survey → exact inventory → help with getting permits in Boston → COIs for both buildings. If you buy, we'll drop off boxes and packing supplies ahead of time and work with your JC property manager to set up the timing of any meter-bag/TNPS.
The crew in uniforms watches over the doors, railings, and floors, pads and shrink-wraps the furniture, and loads it all up quickly. We plan our departure so that we miss the worst traffic and take a route that is legal for trucks. If anything changes, you'll get live updates.
We bring the COI to your Jersey City address, take care of the elevators and loading zones, set up the furniture according to your plan, put the beds back together, and clean up all the packing material. We need to do a final walkthrough together before we close.
