Handing back a Charlotte rental
Under North Carolina law, once the lease ends and you return possession, your landlord has 30 days to mail or hand you the security deposit balance with an itemized list of any damage. When the damage cannot be priced in time, you get an interim accounting within 30 days and a final one within 60. Normal wear and tear cannot be charged against you. If the landlord has no address for you, the deposit is applied after 30 days and any balance is held for you for at least six months (N.C. Gen. Stat. 42-52). Give the landlord your Houston address in writing on your last day, and take photos of each room after the crew has carried the last box out.
Two driving days, 1,040 miles
Our truck takes I-85 out of Charlotte to Montgomery, where that interstate ends, then I-65 south to the coast at Mobile. From there it is I-10 west, then I-12, which skirts Lake Pontchartrain to the north and rejoins I-10 past Baton Rouge for the last stretch into Houston. About 370 of the 1,040 miles are on I-10. Roughly 15 hours of driving cannot fit one day under the federal 11-hour limit, which is why the truck needs two driving days; the fuel for both is in your rate.
- Charlotte: furniture is padded and, where needed, taken apart before it goes on; you check the inventory, then you and the crew sign the bill of lading.
- Between the cities: a day of driving, a night's stop and a second day, with your load kept on board.
- Houston: be there for the arrival time we give you and show where everything goes; anything damaged is listed on the Damage Report before you sign for delivery.
At the Houston address
Moving into an apartment tower or a gated complex? Ask about elevator hours and the loading spot for move-in day, and book them yourself, since that part is yours. Ask the building for its insurance requirements in writing and send them to us; our Certificate of Insurance repeats that wording.
Moving into a house with City trash service? Furniture, mattresses and appliances you will not keep go out as heavy trash, which the City collects every other month on a day assigned to each address. Piles go behind the curb no sooner than 6 p.m. the Friday before and no later than 7 a.m. on pickup day. Buildings with more than eight units are not served, and between pickup months the City's residential drop-off sites take bulky items from residents who show proof of address (City of Houston Solid Waste).
