How Much Does It Cost to Move from San Antonio to Houston?
A one bedroom apartment from San Antonio to Houston runs around $1,500 and our flat rates on this route start there. The figure is quoted in writing before the moving day. Mileage part is small and fixed at 197 miles; it’s how much there is to carry and how hard it is to get to that really moves your number.
| Type of Move | Average Flat Rate | Typical Delivery |
|---|---|---|
| One-bedroom apartment | $1,500 | Same day |
| Two-bedroom apartment | $2,500 | Same day |
| Three-bedroom apartment | $3,500 | Next morning |
| Four-bedroom house | $5,000 | Next morning |
| Small office (up to 10 employees) | $6,500 | Weekend window |
| Medium office (10–50 employees) | $8,000 | Weekend window |
| Large office (50+ employees) | $10,000 | Weekend window |
They schedule office moves around your downtime, not on a fixed delivery day. Most loads after close on a Friday and have you reopened in Houston on the Monday.
What the flat rate already includes:
- the crew, the truck, fuel and the 197-mile drive;
- pads, shrink wrap and floor protection at both addresses;
- furniture taken apart in San Antonio and put back together in Houston;
- tolls, when the quickest way into your neighborhood is the Sam Houston Tollway or the Grand Parkway rather than the toll-free 610 Loop;
- basic carrier liability at the level stated in your moving services contract, with a higher agreed limit available for an added charge;
- the COI paperwork for buildings that ask for it.
Flat rate vs hourly on this route
Most Texas movers price a 197-mile job by the hour, then tack on drive time in both directions, a fuel surcharge and fees for stairs, long carries and shuttles when the truck can't reach the door. That’s why an hourly quote and an invoice are two different numbers so many times. Ours is one figure agreed in writing before we load and the drive, the fuel, the tolls and the access are all in it.
The two things that move that figure more than anything is how much of the packing you hand over, we can take all of it, some of it or none of it, and access at each end. A cheap version of this move is a garage level load in Shavano Park delivered to a driveway in Katy. The expensive one is a third-floor walk-up in Southtown delivered into a Midtown high-rise on a booked elevator slot. Pianos, safes and gym equipment are priced as their own line item. So the estimate you approve is the estimate you pay. Anything added afterward - an extra room, packing you decide to hand over, a change of address - is agreed with you in writing first and itemized on the contract you get at delivery.
Timing is also important, not just for us. Demand for movement on Texas routes peaks from May to September, and market rates for that span are generally 20-30% higher than the year-round average. The quiet half of the calendar is from early October through April.
What a San Antonio to Houston Move Day Looks Like
Our San Antonio to Houston movers load early – usually the first half of the morning – so the truck clears San Antonio before the I-10 corridor thickens up. From there it is a straight run east past Seguin, Luling, Schulenburg and Columbus. The last 30 miles define your afternoon. At Katy, I-10 becomes the Katy Freeway and depending where you are landing the crew either stays on the main lanes to the 610 Loop or swings around on Beltway 8. Most one and two bedroom moves are unloaded and reassembled the same evening. We see that before leaving, not after. Three-bedroom homes and up usually load one day and deliver the next morning; nobody does good work unloading a house at ten at night.
One date to watch: The Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, peaks around September 10 and is really active from mid-August to mid-October. It very rarely cancels a move, but if a named storm is tracking toward the Texas coast in your delivery week we will call you about the date before you have to call us.
And you are moving to a climate that is more humid than the one you are leaving. Houston receives close to 50 inches of rain a year as opposed to San Antonio's 32 and has higher humidity year-round. Wooden furniture, upholstered furniture, vinyl records, books, and anything stored in cardboard all react differently once they arrive — something to know before you end up with three weeks’ worth of boxes stacked in a garage in August.
Arriving in Houston: What Actually Slows Moves Down
Buildings
Buildings in downtown, Midtown, around the Galleria and near the Texas Medical Center usually require a Certificate of Insurance naming the property and its management company as additional insured, not just as certificate holder (which provides no coverage), typically at $1 million per occurrence, plus a reserved freight elevator. The elevators there usually run in three- or four-hour blocks -- a couple of the downtown towers only allow two -- and the good slots fill up, so two weeks' notice isn't excessive for a first-of-the-month move. When you book, send us the property manager’s contact and the building’s requirement sheet and it’s not your problem anymore.
Streets
There is no "moving permit" in Houston. What it has is the parking chapter, Chapter 26 of the city code, which prohibits a truck of this size from parking on a residential street except when it is being loaded or unloaded; a ParkHouston meter-bagging permit when a truck needs to hold metered spaces; and a Public Works obstruction permit when a lane or sidewalk is truly blocked. Width and low branches are usually the real constraint in The Heights, Montrose and the older streets inside the Loop, not paperwork. When you book send us the address and your coordinator checks the street and the building rules in advance of the date, instead of the crew finding them on arrival.
When the keys come late
The most common wrinkle on this route is a gap between the San Antonio lease ending and the Houston place being ready. We load on your final day in San Antonio, put the shipment into secure storage, and complete delivery when you have keys. The moving rate you agreed does not change. Storage is quoted separately and appears on a separate line so you can see exactly what the wait costs.
Moving from Houston to San Antonio Instead?
Google returns almost identical results for both directions of this route -- four of the top ten pages ranking for "san antonio to houston movers" are pages for Houston-to-San-Antonio -- so this one covers both. Census flows say the same thing: the return direction is almost as heavy as the outbound. It’s the same 197 miles, same TxDMV authority and flat-rate structure, and the difference is at the far end: beyond downtown, the Pearl District and the Medical Center, San Antonio deliveries are mostly houses and garden apartments, so the elevator and COI choreography often doesn’t apply—and where it does, we do it the same way. On the quote form, put Houston as the pickup address.
Either way, send both addresses and a room-by-room inventory through the quote form and you'll get a written flat-rate estimate back, usually the same business day.
