Where the truck can stand in Minneapolis

A moving truck needs room at the curb, and in Minneapolis you hold that room with an obstruction permit from Public Works, requested online through the City's Roway system (City of Minneapolis). Posting No Parking signs takes 48 hours' notice, and hooding a meter takes 24, so put the request in as soon as the delivery window is set. The permit is yours to get; we tell you how long the truck is and where it needs to stop.

Delivering in winter? When the City declares a snow emergency, parking rules run three days. From 9 p.m. on Day 1, nobody parks on either side of a snow emergency route, the streets with red route signs and blue name signs. On Day 2 the even side of other streets clears from 8 a.m., and on Day 3 the odd side does (snow emergency parking rules). A street that is fully plowed is open again. If one is declared during your window, send us the address and we plan the unload around that day's rule. In an apartment or condo building, book the freight elevator, ask about dock hours, and forward the insurance wording the manager wants on our certificate.

The road west: 652 miles of I-80

The truck leaves on the Mass Pike, picks up I-84 across Connecticut and New York, and joins I-80 in Pennsylvania for 652 miles, a run that turns into a toll road in Ohio and again in Indiana. The Chicago Skyway leads into the city, and past Chicago the truck takes the Illinois Tollway into Wisconsin, and 172 miles of I-94 finish the trip. Count on roughly 21 hours at the wheel. Federal hours of service cap a driver at 11 driving hours after a 10-hour break, so the trip takes 2 driving days, and the fuel and every toll are already in your rate. Federal time zone rules draw the eastern and central line at the east edge of LaPorte County, Indiana (49 CFR 71.5), and the Indiana Toll Road crosses it on this route. Minneapolis stays an hour behind Boston all year, so when you set the unload hour with our Boston office, give it in Minneapolis time and pass the same hour to your building.

New residents have 60 days to register a passenger car in Minnesota, at a deputy registrar office or by mail, and right away if the Massachusetts registration has already run out (Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services). Keep the title, or the lender's details if there is a loan, in the car with you rather than in a box on the truck. Paint thinner, gas cans, a full propane tank, explosives and firearms stay off the truck.

Our trucks cannot carry flammable liquids, gasoline or propane containers, explosives or firearms. Empty the mower's tank and leave the grill tank behind. Documents and anything you cannot replace ride better in your own car. The crew does not disconnect gas or water lines either, so have the washer and the stove unhooked before loading day.

Parking rules change for three days, so the truck's spot is planned around them.

For three days the City limits parking street by street: snow emergency routes close from 9 p.m. on Day 1, then the even side and the odd side of other streets on Days 2 and 3. Tell us your street, and we plan where and when the truck stops; a fully plowed street can be used again. The City posts the rules on its snow emergency page.

Minnesota gives new residents 60 days to register a passenger vehicle, at a deputy registrar office or by mail, and immediately if the old registration has expired. Bring the title, your insurance details and your ID (Driver and Vehicle Services).
