Before the truck reaches Jackson
Inside Jackson city limits, JXN Water runs water and sewer service, and the city starts trash pickup at a house only after that account is open (City of Jackson Solid Waste). Start service through the JXN Water customer portal a few days before delivery, so the water runs when the crew carries in the first boxes. Pickup comes twice a week at houses, duplexes and triplexes, and the second pickup also takes 2 bulk items, so an old mattress or couch you replace can go out with it. Moving into an apartment or a gated community? Ask the manager or the HOA for the truck hours, where the truck may stand and the insurance wording they need, then send us that wording for our certificate.
Two days of driving
The truck leaves Boston on the Mass Pike, works through Connecticut on I-84, I-91 and I-95, and crosses New Jersey and Pennsylvania on I-78. The longest stretch is 525 miles of I-81 heading south, then short runs on I-40, I-75 and I-24 lead to I-59, which carries the truck 282 miles southwest before I-20 brings it into Jackson. That is about 21 and a half hours of driving. A driver may log 11 hours a day under federal rules, so the trip takes 2 driving days, and fuel and tolls for all of it are part of your rate. Going to Tennessee instead? Our Boston to Nashville page follows this same road as far as I-40.
- Loading day in Boston: the crew pads and loads, you check every room and closet, and you sign the bill of lading.
- Driving days: two days south, with the clock change at the Alabama line.
- Delivery in Jackson, 3 to 6 days after loading: rooms first, then the furniture that was taken apart is rebuilt, and a Damage Report is filled in if anything needs it.
One hour back at the Alabama line
Federal time zone law puts the line between eastern and central time on the Georgia and Alabama border (49 CFR 71.5), which I-59 crosses on this route. Jackson keeps central time, an hour behind Boston all year. When you agree on a delivery hour with our Boston office, say it in Jackson time, and give the HOA or the leasing office that same hour.
Mississippi deadlines after you arrive
A car with a current registration from Massachusetts has 30 days after the move to get Mississippi plates. Take the Massachusetts registration to the county Tax Collector's office and fill out the application for a Mississippi title and registration there (Mississippi Department of Revenue). Buying a house? The homestead exemption only counts if you own and live in the home on January 1, and the application goes to the county Tax Assessor between January 1 and April 1 (homestead rules). Buy in the summer, and you file the next winter.
Leaving Boston
If you want the curb on your Boston street held for the truck, the street permit is yours to reserve, and so are the freight elevator and the loading dock. Ask the Boston building for its certificate wording too, and send it to us with the one from Jackson. Our pricing page explains how the rate is set, and the packing guide below helps you plan the weeks before.
