If you are asking how much do movers cost in NYC, it depends on the size of the move, how much packing is required, how accessible both addresses are to the truck and any particular goods being relocated. The main difference on this route is generally curb access: a walk-up in Manhattan and a rowhouse in Georgetown add labor a straight dock-to-dock task does not.

This includes route distance, volume of inventory, stairs or elevator access, specific products such as safes, pianos or exercise equipment, and other services such as packing, unpacking or storage. Specialty pricing is straightforward, meaning we charge a flat amount for upright pianos and piano moving is quoted prior to move day.

Sample NYC to Washington, D.C. Moving Timeline

The cities are around 225 miles apart, a four to five hour trip down I-95 and the New Jersey Turnpike passing Philadelphia about halfway, as well as Wilmington and Baltimore. Most NYC to Washington, D.C. moving companies can do the route the same day or next day depending on load size and delivery access.

Our crew starts loading in New York early in the morning, before the street congestion and summer heat begin. From there the road goes south on I-95 — a corridor renowned for tolls in New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland and slow portions leaving the city and reaching the D.C. area during rush hour.

The mileage itself is less important than building type, elevator reservations, loading-dock time slots and the ability of the vehicle to lawfully park near the door. This is true on both sides — a designated curb spot in NYC and a no-parking zone in D.C. can both affect the timing.

The move coordinator stays in touch with you, so you know when loading is finished, when the truck is on the road and when delivery is due in Washington, D.C.

What to Know Before Moving from NYC to Washington, D.C.

The route itself is short, but the curb rules on either end are not. Truck parking needs to be separately secured for the NYC pickup and the D.C. drop-off — a permit at one site does not cover the other — and both localities aggressively enforce their restrictions.

New York does not have a general moving permit, however the NYC Department of Transportation does need an over-dimensional vehicle permit for bigger trucks and does enforce commercial-vehicle parking, alternate side restrictions and hydrant clearance. Most co-op and condo buildings also require a COI before a truck can park. In Washington, a moving truck requires a public space permit from the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) applied for through the TOPS system, with “No Parking” signs put ahead of the move. We’ll assist you get these lined up before moving day.

According to HUD study, D.C. is a city of apartments and rowhouses: high-rise and large apartment buildings and attached historic rowhouses comprise most of the city’s housing stock. The neighborhoods of Georgetown, Capitol Hill, Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom mean short interior staircases, tight bends and street parking instead of driveways. Downtown and Navy Yard high-rises usually require elevator reservations and dock scheduling.

Weather is big on the delivery side. D.C. has a humid subtropical climate according to NOAA climate normals and July is the hottest and most humid month with heat index readings that can reach well above the ambient temperature. For art, wood furniture, instruments and electronics, we design wrapping and packing to minimize risk of damage in transit caused by heat and humidity.

Got something big or heavy to move? Let us know before you move. Heavy safes, bulky furniture, gym equipment, pianos and fragile items may require more manpower, special protection or a bespoke handling plan.

The Moving Process (NYC to Washington, D.C.)

Preparation

First, check your inventory and create a service strategy. We verify what’s being transported, what has to be packed, what access restrictions are in place, and if either building needs a COI or elevator reservation. On this route we also get the parking element out of the way early — the NYC curb space and the DDOT public space permit — so the team doesn’t have to do the block looping on move day. If you require packing services, we can pack all or some of your belongings prior to your move day.

Your estimate will clearly detail the final scope. Timing and pricing may be affected by packing level, specific items and building access.

Moving Day

Pads and shrink wrap protect the furniture and the goods are organized and loaded onto the truck for safe transit and fast unloading. We plan to leave NYC early for efficiency and to avoid delays/detours on I-95.

This is an interstate transfer, therefore we do it under our federal USDOT and MC authority. We plan the route, we have a monitored inventory, we coordinate with both buildings and we communicate from loading through delivery. Here the structure is more important than the relatively short distance, because the paperwork and access restrictions cover two jurisdictions.

Delivery & Unpacking

Upon our arrival in Washington, we unload and move furniture into the appropriate rooms and reassemble standard items if necessary. If you have booked unpacking, we can also remove the boxes and packing materials after the set-up has been completed.

Please call our office immediately if you notice any broken or missing items. The transfer includes basic Released Value Protection, and Full Value Protection is available for an extra price.

F.A.Q. about moving from NYC to DC

Flat-rate pricing is used for long distance moves like NYC to D.C. so the fee is fixed for the work rather than paid by the hour. Your rate is based on inventory size, packing requirements, access at both sites and any specialty items. As a general indication, market data for this ~226 mile trip is around $1,400 to $6,000+ depending on home size. Move & Care will give you a free, all-inclusive estimate based on your actual move. There are no hidden fees after you confirm the inventory and services. Local moves are charged per the hour with a three-hour minimum.
The cities are approximately 225 miles apart, a four to five hour travel down I-95 and the New Jersey Turnpike therefore most relocation can be done same day or following day. Larger families usually deliver in a one-to-two day span. In actuality, timing is more affected by access to the building than by mileage: elevator reservations, loading-dock slots, stairs and how close the truck can lawfully park at either end can add or save hours. Your relocation consultant will confirm a delivery window prior to move day and will keep you updated from loading to delivery.
Trucks have separate parking at each end and a permit at one address does not cover the other. New York does not have a general moving permit, however the NYC Department of Transportation (nyc.gov/dot) needs an over-dimensional vehicle permit for larger vehicles and enforces commercial-parking, alternate-side, and hydrant laws. In Washington you need a public space permit from DDOT. You apply using the TOPS system at tops.ddot.dc.gov and install โ€œNo Parkingโ€ signs in preparation. Move & Care helps line these up, but double check the exact rules for your block with the city or your building.
Yes. Most NYC co-ops and condominiums, and many managed buildings and high-rises in D.C., will not let a truck pull up without a COI listing the building or management business as additional insured. Move & Care prepares the COIs for the origin and destination buildings as needed. Please share your buildingโ€™s move-in policy with us early so the paperwork is authorized ahead of move day instead of holding up the crew, as each building has its own regulations, elevator reservation forms, and move-in windows. Consult with your HOA or property management for specific rules.
Yes, for a long-distance relocation, the flat-rate quote often includes the moving crew, truck, fuel, tolls, miles, transportation and basic insurance, which is a big deal on the I-95 corridor, where tolls add up through New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. We provide standard moving equipment, including blankets, dolly, and tools (there is a $50 equipment charge). Packing materials, specialist item handling, storage and optional add-ons are stated separately for clarity in the cost. A 3.5% processing fee applies on card transactions. Cash transactions may receive a 5% discount.
Basic Released Value Protection is included with each transfer at no additional charge and limits liability to no more than 60 cents per pound per article. Full Value Protection is available at an extra charge for higher-value items โ€” something to consider for electronics, art or antiques, especially in transit in D.C.'s summer heat and humidity. If there is any damage notify the staff immediately and if possible fill out a Damage Report before they leave. Damage identified later should be reported within 96 hours so we can process the claim.
